Q. Since this is a drama that captures all four seasons, it feels like winter – not just summer – must also have come with a lot of challenges. There was especially that scene with the heavy snowfall – how was that filmed? “The scene where Tae-seo and Eun-ah go outside and run around after drinking wine was filmed in actual heavy snowfall. For the sequence on the day Tae-seo leaves for the military – when he goes to the bus stop and waits until the bus arrives – there was no snow, so we had help from CG. (…) There’s an interesting story behind that. That day was actually our final day of filming. It was the absolute deadline – we had to get everything shot by then. I kept delaying filming for as long as possible because I felt that only if we somehow got snow would we get a result we could really feel at ease about. (…) Then, during the final week of filming, we heard there would be a lot of snow in Gangwon Province. So the day before the shoot, we fixed on a location, went on a location scout, and made all the plans. I went to sleep after hearing the forecast that there would be heavy snow the next day – but at 3am, I got a call from the cinematographer. It wasn’t snowing, it was raining. If it rains, you can’t even use special effects. I thought, ‘We’re done for.’ So at 3.30am, everyone gathered in the cinematographer’s room and discussed what to do. We checked CCTV feeds all across Gangwon Province, and there were two places where it was snowing. We had to decide immediately. We thought, ‘Let’s at least head to one of the places where it’s snowing at 5am,’ and when we checked, it said we’d arrive at 7am. We went there, confirmed that snow was actually falling, and changed the destination for the team departing from Seoul to the Daegwallyeong area. From 7am onwards, we did a location scout, finished preparations for filming by 9am, and then shot all day. For the daytime scenes, the snow fell intermittently, so we supplemented the snowfall slightly, and at night it was literally a blizzard.
