#BREAKING: The deadly H5 variant of avian influenza has been detected in a bird that washed up on a remote beach in Western Australia's south, the first time the disease has been found in Australia. On Saturday federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said further testing had confirmed the bird had the H5 strain, after a suspected positive result for avian influenza was returned on Friday. ab.co/4ejrD3A

🇦🇺🇦🇶 13,000 Baby Seals Dead: A Warning Sign, or Mother Nature Just Doing Her Thing? A deadly H5 strain of bird flu has wiped out an estimated 76% of southern elephant seal pups on Australia’s Heard and McDonald Islands, with roughly 13K dead pups. Drone surveys revealed heartbreaking scenes of carcasses littering the volcanic shores. Some beaches saw 97% mortality. Hundreds of king penguins also died, with seabirds hit hard. Scientists say this is the first detection of H5 bird flu in an Australian external territory. The virus likely arrived from nearby Crozet Islands around August 2025 and is spreading eastward across the sub-Antarctic. Always scary when this happens in a sanctuary meant to protect animals.
