Thoughts on the Netherlands-Japan game: 1. So so good. Both teams were well matched. Solid defense, brilliant in attack, and just technically good overall. 2. Netherlands slightly edges Japan out in terms of who the better team is. I can totally see them winning the whole thing. Would love to see Japan go far as well and I’d be rooting for them. 3. First half wasn’t bad but the second half was way better. As soon as Netherlands opened the scoring, it was like Japan woke up from their deep slumber. They swiftly moved from their defensive strategy (good enough but boring) to a more attacking gameplay and in a few minutes, had gotten their equalizer. I’m glad they did, cuz if they hadn’t, the Dutch would have been on cruise control and the game’s intensity would have petered off. 4. Summerville’s goal (the Netherland’s second goal) was exquisite. Long range and very clinical. But if that Kubo shot had gone in, it would have overshadowed Summerville’s and would have been the best goal of the match. Nearly from the middle of the field and I could have sworn it was going into the top corner.
