I don’t think people fully understand how difficult and demanding physical comedy actually is. What Ryan Gosling did with Ken in Barbie isn’t something you can just “coast” through. It requires insane precision, timing, and a total commitment to the bit without ever winking at the audience. Gosling could’ve easily phoned it in, played Ken as a flat, one-note joke, but instead he built a fully realized character through exaggerated mannerisms, musicality, and razor-sharp comedic instincts. That takes real craft and control. He commits completely, never holding back or being afraid to make fun of himself, even going all in from the moment that first look photo dropped with the Calvin Klein underwear. Comedy like this only looks effortless because he’s just that good. Gosling fits the role so naturally, it’s hard to imagine anyone else pulling off Ken with that same mix of commitment, absurdity, and sincerity. Paired with Margot Robbie, the dynamic just clicks, they balance each other perfectly and elevate the material into something way more memorable than it could’ve been otherwise. In my opinion, making people laugh in a movie is way harder than making them cry, and performances like this prove it as comedy of this level demands just as much skill, if not more, than many traditionally “serious” roles that Gosling has taken on throughout his career.
