It's actually for security. anti-sybil as well as making spam and Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks prohibitively expensive.

$XLM supply is permanently capped at 50 billion, no inflation. 67% currently circulating. Every time you send a transaction on Stellar, you pay a tiny base fee of 0.00001 XLM (100 stroops) per operation. That XLM gets moved into the Fee Pool and locked forever, a special account that no one can access or spend from. Removed from circulation, creating an ongoing burn with every transaction. 🔥 Real, built-in scarcity. This is massively bullish if you make tens of millions of transactions per day.
