Johan Cruyff, Paolo Maldini, George Best, Zlatan Ibrahimović football history is full of legends without a World Cup medal. But fair or unfair, because Ronaldo is judged at the absolute highest level, people will always look at the World Cup as the one mountain he never truly conquered. I hope this year is different.

From getting subbed in most games to letting others take free kicks, to even crossing free kicks he would normally shoot. I want Portugal and Ronaldo to win the World Cup. I think it's the befitting crowning glory for Ronaldo. Just as I supported and wanted Messi to win because a player of his quality and greatness deserved something of such global eminence to underline his legacy, I think Ronaldo deserves it too. If he wins it, it'll be good for the sport. If Ronaldo doesn't win it on his sixth attempt, he will be the greatest football player never to have won the World Cup. Players who define generations win the World Cup and it's understandable that he's hungry for it. I hope his teammates give him the same reverence Argentina gives Messi, and will make the most of him. If it will take playing a lesser role in how it happens, Ronaldo should understand and back his teammates too. They should do it for him, and themselves.
