Where the Real Problem Lies: A Case Study of Dr. Sharafudeen Gbadebo Raji
In the ongoing discussions and misunderstandings about the positions of our past scholars and those identified as Salafi (commonly referred to as Ahlus Sunnah) on matters of Fiqh and Aqeedah, it is helpful to use Dr. Sharafudeen Gbadebo Raji as a case study.
Dr. Gbadebo is someone I highly commend for his dedication and tireless efforts in teaching the Deen. However, while I respect his contributions, I do not subscribe to identifying exclusively with the Salafi label or restricting the term Ahlus Sunnah to a particular group.
The core issue here is not about personalities, but about methodology. The problem arises when the positions of our past scholars are dismissed simply because they differ from a particular viewpoint.
For instance, Dr. Gbadebo often answers questions based on the Hanbali school of thought. However, it is well known that in West Africa, the dominant school is the Maliki madhhab. Therefore, it would be more balanced and educational if he clarifies to his audience that earlier scholars held their views based on their respective schools of thought, rather than presenting opposing positions as though they lack valid evidence.
A practical example illustrates this clearly:
Dr. Gbadebo once stated that a person who stands alone in a congregational prayer must repeat the prayer. While this aligns with the Hanbali position, the Maliki school holds that if a person stands alone due to lack of space, their prayer is still valid and does not need to be repeated.
This highlights the real issue: not necessarily disagreement, but the absence of proper contextual explanation.
In summary, this is the problem—and this is also the solution:
We must acknowledge the diversity within Islamic scholarship and present differing opinions with fairness and context, rather than dismissing them.
May Almighty Allah guide us all and grant us wisdom and unity.

BREAKING: U.S. Policy Firm To Brief Congress, Trump Administration On INEC’s Suspension Of ADC Leadership
“Nigeria is not only Africa’s largest democracy, but also a critical strategic partner of the United States in regional security, economic stability, and counterterrorism. The integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process is therefore of direct importance to U.S. interests and global stability,” it said.
According to the firm, its planned engagement in Washington is aimed at ensuring sustained international attention on Nigeria’s democratic processes.
“Accordingly, the firm will be presenting its concerns to members of the United States Congress and the Trump Administration to ensure that the importance of free, fair, and transparent democratic processes in Nigeria remains firmly on the international agenda,” it stated.
