I don't think the average Californian is registered that, if the state can't make itself affordable to working- and middle-class families in the next few years, there will be mass school closures.
Garry Tan@garrytan

California will lose 15.7% of its public school students by 2031. Nearly 3x the national rate. Idaho and Florida are growing. This isn't an inevitability — it'a consequence of what happens when housing costs too much and schools stop working. gli.st/2rmnc27p

“We should keep this restaurant open for old times sake, even though the food is bad and the original owners sold it long ago” is peak San Francisco brain. Lay a plaque to commemorate the history and keep it moving!

El Faro, creator of the Mission burrito, might close after a rent hike. It should be preserved, argues critic Cesar Hernandez — even if the burrito is not what it used to be. sfchronicle.com/food/restauran…

Everyone decided they hate carbon pricing for exactly the reason it's good — it attempts to actually take the the climate problem seriously as something that is neither fake nor a world-ending apocalypse. slowboring.com/p/my-political…

A through-line in Trump v2, from being shocked at retaliation in the gerrymandering wars, to Jones now being electable, to Canada allowing in Chinese EVs, to being blindsided by Iran fighting back, is not realizing that we don’t just have norms Because Woke, they’re detente
William B. Fuckley@opinonhaver

The pearl-clutching from Virginia republicans over this and Jay Jones is so funny. You ran on a “make these specific people’s lives worse” campaign, got elected and did that, ruining lives and careers of your neighbors, and now you’re shocked they don’t like you.

The core issue with transit in America is that the people who run it do not view it as the safest, most efficient and affordable way to move people at scale. They often view it as a jobs program, equipment purchase program or social services for those without other options.
Gianmatteo Costanza@emissionite

Is public transit primarily meant to serve commuters by affordably moving them from A to B, or is it a jobs program? The answer to that explains everything that is going wrong in our discourse.

"For all of the intellectual dressing, Hungary has ended up looking more like Vladimir Putin’s mafia state, while Poland and the Baltic states, which adopted more classic market solutions, are on course to be richer than Spain and Italy."

This is, somehow, meant to be an anti-Sherrill argument, but even when trying to pretend affordability would be bad they make the upzoned city look unfathomably cool. We could have this. You could afford to own a home and start a family. It'd be amazing.
Kim Chi@KimChiSpicey

Vote for Stephen Sherrill in D2 so we drastically transform the Marina into a hyperdense waterfront urban center. Let’s make it look like Miami! We could fit 200K-700K MORE people in D2 alone. 90% of the city wants this!
