@afneil I admire the way BBC News is investing and exploring new techniques to describe and explain, with BBC Verify and BBC InDepth. A good example here. No doubt will stimulate lively commentary. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Absolute bombshell. Dr Éveline Hitti, chair of the emergency department at the American University of Beirut completely shatters Israel's fake narrative of targeting combatants. She reveals that while less than 1% of casualties in Ukraine are children, in Lebanon it is 14%, and in Gaza a staggering 30%. Pure evil exposed.

I was thirty-something years old when Iranian students dragged me into a room and told me I wasn't going anywhere. Four hundred and forty-four days later, I walked out. I've spent the decades since trying to make sense of what happened — and what keeps happening — between our two countries. So don't talk to me about Iran like it's an abstraction. I lived inside that confrontation. I felt it. Which is why I'm not ready to write off this ceasefire, even though everything about it is maddening. Negotiations in Pakistan may produce nothing. The talks could collapse before they get started. I've seen American diplomacy with Iran fail more times than I can count, and usually for the same reasons — too much pride, too little patience, and Israel holding a match in the corner of the room. But here's what I know in my bones: another war won't break Iran. We just tried. It didn't work. Iran doesn't break — it absorbs, it adapts, and it waits. I watched that stubbornness up close for 444 days. What bothers me most isn't that Iran is winning this moment — it's that we handed it to them. Tehran's framework is running these negotiations. Iran still controls the Strait of Hormuz. Still collecting tolls. Trump looked at their proposal and called it workable. I never thought I'd see the day, but here we are. Iran wants everything on the table — sanctions, enrichment rights, American troops out, and a deal that covers what's happening in Lebanon and Gaza too. That's a lot to swallow. And Israel, which wasn't invited to this conversation, is already making clear it has no intention of being constrained by it. That's the part that worries me the most. Because if Israel keeps bombing and Washington can't or won't stop it, none of this holds. And yet — and I say this as someone who has every reason to distrust Tehran — I don't think we go back to all-out war. Not because anyone has suddenly gotten wise, but because the math doesn't work. A second round ends the same way. Iran still controls the Strait. The global economy still flinches when Tehran flexes. What we're heading toward isn't peace. It's something smaller and more precarious — two countries silently agreeing not to destroy each other today, with no paperwork and no guarantees. I know what it's like to survive on something that fragile. For 444 days, that's all I had.

#Netanyahou #Israël #TzipiLivni reseauinternational.net/tzipi-livni-an…

With all due respect, David - she’s really not essential viewing. Kelly is an excellent broadcaster (I’ll give her that) but has until now backed Trump all the way whilst cheerleading a massacre of women and children in Gaza for two years. Her about turn is entirely cynical: based on realising she was entirely out of step with other A-list conservative YouTubers by defending the indefensible. She’s been losing relevance and (my guess is) downloads for months. This is a well articulated business move by Kelly.

It’s obviously a shame that OpenAI have paused some of their data centre investment here in the UK, and high energy prices need to be tackled for everybody - from household bills to heavy industry and AI. But the UK, as is this case with many other countries, is not the natural home for many gigafactory-scale DCs aimed at huge training runs. While we must have this capacity to some degree ( and you can apply now to SovAI’s AIRR compute programme to access it! ), DCs of Stargate size are probably best suited to cold countries or areas with extremely cheap domestic energy supply, and perhaps one day space. What the UK must do is be the best place for companies in areas of AI where we have abundant strengths to start and scale - novel chips, heterogenous compute systems, edge inference, photonics, new model architectures, frontier models in biology, chemistry, physical sciences, voice, embodied AI, advanced engineering in robotics, agent security. The list goes on. I hope the companies building in those sectors get the same press coverage for each of their technical breakthroughs & commercial milestones as this OpenAI story has got!

The plan for a Greater Israel extending over the West Bank into Lebanon and Syria laid out with great clarity by a senior government minister. This is of course completely illegal, goes against all the stipulations of International Law and should lead to immediate sanctions
Ihab Hassan@IhabHassane

At the inauguration of a new illegal settlement, Israel's Finance Minister Smotrich lays out his vision for a Greater Israel: “There will be expansion in Gaza that will extend our borders. In Lebanon, to the Litani, in Syria, Mount Hermon, parts of the north, south, and east.”

Israel destroyed the last bridge connecting southern Lebanon to the rest of the country. What Israel is currently doing in southern Lebanon is clearly aimed at ethnic cleansing and colonization. Civilians can't flee. Ambulances cannot reach the wounded or the hospitals on the other side. Laying siege cruelly cut off all fuel from entering, with threats to bomb aid trucks and medical vehicles heading south. Entire communities are cut off from essential supplies. Food, water, and medical supplies currently available in the south are sufficient for less than a month, with flagrant violations of international humanitarian law and the international community remains silent.

I24NEWS @inon_yttach: The Israeli cabinet quietly approved the construction of 34 new settlements in Judea and Samaria—an unprecedented number approved at once, and during ongoing military operations. Among the approved locations are areas within Palestinian enclaves in northern Samaria, as well as remote points that even the military rarely reaches. In fact, this marks the largest single approval of settlements by any cabinet to date. Until now, 69 settlements had been approved across numerous decisions; this move brings the total to 103 in one step.
