One thing I definitely do not miss about being single is the crushing loneliness, especially at night. When I was in my early 20s, I remember coming home at night from my job picking up packages, sitting in front of my TV, eating Frosted Mini-Wheats or some other garbage for dinner, and watching sitcom reruns on TV Land in my chair in the cell of my little apartment. I would find myself having parasocial relationships with the characters and would get caught up in the story in a way that I would not now. I remember watching “The Cosby Show” and telling the tv, “Oh, Theo. You are such a mess.” and realizing how alone I felt. The irony is, I will see photos now and notice different women and friends who I could have had more closeness with. I think I had exiled myself somehow from relationships and had become stuck. Not knowing how to reach out again.
