Proof of how successful the left has been at severing us from our roots is the visceral reaction you get from some ‘nationalists’ when you point out America’s or Australia’s British racial and cultural origins.
Leftists’ success in decoupling the Australian identity started in years around WWII when the Communist Party and its fellow travelers actively fabricated some “unique Australian identity” via theatre and folklore. Then from the 1960s onward, republican, multicultural, and anti-colonial intellectuals doubled down, reframing this invented Australianness as something organic and self-created, importantly wholly distinct from Britain.
Over time that subversive identity was made out to be a nationalist position, that to reject Australia’s roots (Britain) is something RW.
Similar things played out in America with the open society and melting pot myths (which of course later downstream only made the situation worse for Australia).
This deliberate rewriting of national identity was key to opening borders. Once Australia no longer saw itself as an extension of the British people, it could be recast as a deracinated economic zone with values and paper being the foundation of the nation.
