@JubalHarshfdnm @Devon_Eriksen_ That's fine. I would have also said 72 in most cases, but I can't say that the OP is wrong. And you just said, "It is not a math question" but you tried to make it one previously. But the thing is that if you start involving maths, you're getting closer to proving him right.

@imrishabhrky @Devon_Eriksen_ Logic works with a set of conditions. While this may be lost in the recursive guess and check that is AI, you guessed until the first two equations were satisfied and applied that to the third. That is not logic, and that is why 64 is wrong. It is not a math question.

This is why IQ tests don't work too well on really smart people. Because sorta smart people tend to give the expected answer. And really smart people tend to point out that the question is wrong, and start arguing with the test, or trying to correct it, thereby making the test impossible to grade and annoying everyone. The expected answer to this is 72. Because 2*2*2 = 8 and 5*5*2 = 50, so 6*6*2 = 72. But the (really) correct answer is "I don't know." Because what you have is two points on a 3 dimensional graph (x,y) -> z. z = 2*x*y is one surface that can be drawn through these two points. And I suspect it's the simplest formula for a surface that can be so drawn, although I haven't bothered to check. But an infinite number of contiguous surfaces can be drawn in three dimensions that encompass these points (2,2,8) and (5,5,50). Each of these surfaces can be described by its own formula. Some of them will also touch (6,6,72). But others of them will touch (6,6, {something else entirely}) instead. This might sound really, really pedantic. But it's not. Everyone knows that the expected answer is the simple one, but that's only on a test... a fake artificial made up problem. When we start trying to do this in the real world, which, after all is what this "IQ" thing is actually for, then using the same kind of "IQ test thinking" can get you in trouble. "My 3-month-old son is now TWICE as big as when he was born. He's on track to weigh 7.5 trillion pounds by age 10." -@pronounced_kyle Fitting the simplest-formula curve, as opposed to the correct curve, makes our predictions of real-world stuff dead wrong. So this kind of test question promotes a dangerous habit of thought. But, Devon, I hear some of you ask, doesn't the principle of Occam's Razor demand that we fit the simplest curve? No. No, it does not. It does not require that we select the simplest possible answer, given what we have currently seen. It requires that we prefer hypotheses that make fewer assumption to those that make more. These are two different things entirely. If I see one black sheep, the simplest hypothesis is that all sheep are black. The hypothesis requiring the fewest assumptions is that at least one sheep is black on at least one side. You will note which of these is correct. All of this is, of course, irrelevant to questions on IQ test. But questions on an IQ test only matter as much as they are relevant to the actual universe... Where ideas like this are very relevant indeed.

@APepeIsFineToo @Devon_Eriksen_ Yeah, my bad. The general linear polynomial would be z = px + (14-p)y - 20, for any real p. And if we go into quadratic, cubic, etc., there are tons of other formulae.

@imrishabhrky @Devon_Eriksen_ Excellent, thank you. Those seem to all work. I think Devon would have done well to include an actual example. It's one thing to doubt, but proof matters. Also, I think you made a typo. The third one is supposed to be "11y", I believe.

I don’t think Occam’s Razor has anything to do with this. There is an implicit assumption in these types of questions that you’re supposed to come up with the pattern that is ‘fully defined and repeated’ by the information given. Usually that means the full pattern is repeated at least two times. In this case, ‘multiply numbers, then multiply by 2’ is the only full pattern (emphasis on ‘full’) that is repeated twice in the information given. If you want to think geometrically, think of of f(x,y) in 3d. (2,2), (5,5), and (6,6) are points on a line in the XY plane. 8 and 50 are the heights of the function. But you only have two heights, which only “fully defines” a straight line embedded in 3d space (not a curve). Yes, there is an infinite number of planes that include that line, and there’s an infinite number of curves that go through those two points in 3d space, but the only ‘thing’ that is fully defined by those two points is the 3d line, which gives you the height of 72 at (6,6) The idea of an IQ test is to distinguish those who intuit those ‘fully defined and repeated patterns’ from those who don’t. Whether that ability is useful in real life is a totally different question, but that doesn’t mean what you’re testing for is not well-defined.

@Devon_Eriksen_ Can you provide a single other formula which fits the top two number groups but arrives at a different answer for the bottom number group? Because otherwise this is just you huffing your own farts after declaring proudly, "You can't know 2+2=4 because math is tricky. I am smart."

@Devon_Eriksen_ Disagree. There are two inferred equations with two known z values. The full would be z = (Ax^c + By^d)/M. Where A,B,c,d, and M are real numbers. The other equation is x = y. The first can then be written as z= [(A+B)x(x^c + x^d)]/M. All valid answers will reduce to 2x^2.

@hicasamadim The answer is 67. The triangles represent a function as follows: f(x,y) = 67 if x=y=6, else 2xy. So f(2,2) = 2*2*2 = 8 f(5,5) = 2*5*5 = 50 f(6,6) = 67.

No controversies. No grudges. Never spoke ill of anyone. Yet on this app, every other day someone from some fan club gets up just to ragebait or disrespect him. Dear @ICC, We wish to take this opportunity to thank you for the recent T20 World Cup, a global cricketing spectacle on a scale unlike any other in past years. It was so good that several nations decided not to leave upon their tournament exit, and it appears they might never do so. As for us, the tournament brought drama and infamy. We staked our claim to replace the forfeiting Pakistan, then realised the harsh economic and logistical realities of international sport. Colombo is not Reykjavík, in so many ways. Then we had the unforfeiture of Pakistan, an event that actually vindicated our 'stay-at-home, fire it out online' strategy. They knew their plan and played it like a fish. Let's not forget the actual cricket. The associate nations nearly caused several shocks - both Nepal, Netherlands, and Italy all coming within a whisker of a win over the big boys. Then there was the classic match between Afghanistan and South Africa, which was so good they did the Super Over twice. At the end of the day, it was India's tournament to host and they delivered, blasting more than 500 runs across the semis and final. They brought the fire. We watched and tried to learn, but lava bedded wickets are not quite the same. Conquering Iceland remains the ultimate litmus test of a batter. We count the statistics and arrive at an aggregate count of 245 posts by us on X and 3,420 loaves of bread baked by our captain, Dushan Bandara, across the tournament as a whole. Our Chairman, a ship captain, steered all voyages safely into harbour. And finally, the world famous Íslensk Premier League (ÍPL) is now only two months away, the T20 franchise tournament with a sub-Arctic twist. We wait patiently and keep our keyboards warm. Yours sincerely, Icelandic Cricket Association

Just before a wedding ceremony was about to begin, a man standing on the stage announced in a loud voice, "If anyone has any objection to this marriage, please state it now—" Right then, a beautiful girl sitting in the very last row, holding a small child in her lap, suddenly pushed people aside and came to the front of the stage. Seeing her, all the people present were stunned. The moment the bride saw the girl near the stage, she slapped the groom hard without thinking anything. The bride's father ran inside the house to grab a stick. The bride's mother fainted right there on the stage. The bridesmaids started badmouthing the groom. And the brothers-in-law began rolling up their sleeves. Seeing the entire situation, the man standing on the stage asked the girl with great astonishment, "Daughter, what is your issue?" The girl replied, "Uncle, it's very hot in the back because the fan isn't working there, plus your voice wasn't clearly audible, and I couldn't see anything, so I just moved to the front." Only then did everyone realize their mistake and heave a sigh of relief! Friends... Social media is also a stage for emotional people, where, without knowing the truth of a matter, people start saying bad things, some start rolling up their sleeves, some start cursing, and some just faint...!! Therefore, always be careful, be vigilant, never fall for anyone's provocation, and always use your own discretion!

I got a call from a scammer yesterday. Me: “Hello.” Scammer: (thick, heavy accent) “Hello. This is Tom Smith from Microsoft Support. We are seeing a lot of virus activity coming from your device.” Me: “Oh no. My device? Are you sure?” Scammer: “Oh yes, Madam. We have many reports.” Me: “Oh, jeez. This is just a cheap one.” Scammer: “All devices have Internet, Madam. Press the Start button again.” Me: “Okay. Same as before.” Scammer: “That’s fine, Madam. We will restart your device. Please turn it off.” Me: “Um… I don’t know how. I’ve never turned it off. It kind of just stays on.” Scammer: “There must be an off button. How do you stop it when it’s running?” Me: “I usually press the big button.” Scammer: “Okay, Madam. Press that button.” Me: “Okay.” Scammer: “Is your device off?” Me: “No. The door popped open.” Scammer: “Door? Is there a disc inside?” Me: “No. There’s a burrito.” Scammer: “Why is there a burrito in your computer?” Me: “Computer? I thought you said this was microwave support.”

This is peak World Cup action happening. - 20 nations - 5 continents And every associate nation is giving tough fights. I hope ICC soon increases the number of nations to 30 or 40, so that more teams can compete against big sides and show their potential. T20 World Cup is the best way to attract global audience in large numbers. And I am damn sure once they start liking cricket, other sports start to feel boring. We need more teams from the Middle East, South America, Europe & North Asia.....

AAKASH CHOPRA ON CRICKETER FAREWELL:🚨🗣️ “In Cricket, Australia didn't give farewell to anyone. They don't care, they think only one thing. It will be communicated that your way ends here, and your way ends for two reasons, one is that whatever is left with you is not that valuable for me, and the other one which is standing will take my country ahead. So my country is more important than you, and there are no farewells, and culturally nobody expects them anymore. Now in Australia, nobody cares that Michael Clarke didn't get it or Steve Smith didn't get it, nobody cares about farewells. Honestly, I’m done with this India–Pakistan circus. Completely drained. I don’t even want them playing each other anymore. We keep beating them in tournaments, and yet the noise never stops. Asia Cup. India dominated start to finish. What did they celebrate? Haris Rauf’s celebration. T20 World Cup, India won again. Their takeaway? “Three quick wickets.” It’s been the same loop for years. They hype their “premium” fast bowlers, and then Kohli, Rohit, Gill, and KL calmly shut them down. Losses so heavy that any other team would’ve gone quiet for months, but this Pakistan team and its fans are so shameless. Their drama, press conferences, social media agendas. Last Asia Cup was peak theatre. Endless hype, endless illogical talks, same ending: defeat. Now it’s Saim Ayub, off one fluke innings, being compared to Abhishek Sharma, the same Abhishek who cooked them, won Player of the Tournament, while Saim was busy getting ducks. Babar gets pushed into Kohli comparisons despite never winning a single ICC tournament MOM. Now Abrar’s on about celebrations, conveniently forgetting how Indian batters made them cry. You can’t even argue with them. Fans, journalists, ex-cricketers, all living in a bubble of delusion. When they have nothing, they invent something. I’m honestly exhausted watching this nonsense.

Dear @ICC, It is with a heavy heart that we now announce our unavailability to replace Pakistan in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Regardless of whether they now withdraw, the short timescales ensure it is impossible for our squad to prepare in the professional manner necessary to compete effectively in this global cricketing spectacle. We are not like Scotland and able to turn up on a whim, with no kit sponsor. Our players are from all walks of life and cannot simply drop their occupations to fly halfway around the world to experience temperatures only normally felt in Finnish saunas. Our captain, a professional baker, needs to attend to his oven, our ship captain needs to steer his vessel, and our bankers need to go bankrupt (again). This is the harsh reality of cricket at the amateur level of the game. This news will be extremely disappointing to our fans. Despite being the most peaceful nation on Earth, we maintain an army of online followers, and are the world's 14th most followed national board on X. We were ready to give the Dutch the biggest shock they have experienced since William of Orange lost the Battle of Landen in 1693. And the Americans were looking forward to taking on Greenland, or so their orange-dyed leader thought. Our loss is likely Uganda's gain. We wish them well. Their kits cannot be missed unless you have epilepsy, in which case they are probably best avoided. The future is always ice, until it isn't. Yours sincerely, Icelandic Cricket Association

No, because you removed one digit from the left and one digit from the right at the same time. If you choose to remove digits from the left, you must keep removing from the left only. If you choose to remove digits from the right, you must keep removing from the right only. Truncation works on both sides, but once you start on one side, you have to continue on that same side.
