@timothyaryal I'm not a 'fan' either. I'm just saying a lot of people don't read the Economist for nuance. We all know what its politics are, it's western liberal bent is not a secret. It's just fun to read something well-written like the obituaries, even if you disagree with its politics.

@inkthink I've never been a fan of it. I dislike its cheerleading for West-made liberal world order—and wars. As someone who thinks politics and prose are intertwined, I think there are better places that offer the nuance about world affairs that The Economist's 1000-word pieces often miss

The Economist has said this... The Economist has said that... Many Nepali editors worship The Economist. They consider it the holy grail of journalism, a north star of fact-based coverage. But do they know what they're really worshipping?
Basil@basilahmed2023

The issue isn’t that The Economist is biased; that’s a given. The issue is that it has convinced so many it is serious, authoritative journalism (through glossy design and the performance of British intellectualism that has no existence) when it is just another unremarkable paper

Women have been part of every movement and revolution Nepal has gone through. Yet, they continue to be sidelined in the political process. This women's month, read our deep dive by Shreeti KC on why this continues to happen. 👇 kalamweekly.substack.com/i/191553420/th…

Out of 165 constituencies, only 14 women won the March 5 direct election. Parties fielded just 395 women out of a total of 3,484 candidates. To meet quota requirements, parties push women through PR, strengthening the perception that women are unable to win elections.

The constitution requires that at least one-third of each party’s members in the Parliament be women, but parties across the board tend to field a minimal number of women in direct elections, instead meeting the constitutional provision through proportional representation. (1/3)

Did YOU want to watch CCTV's AI Martial Arts cartoon about the Straits of Hormuz crisis? Complete with fighting Persian Cats? Well I subtitled it for you so you can enjoy it in all its trope-laden glory! Remember kids, the mountains will stay standing while the green water flows, and the true art of war is not figuring out how to fight, but how to stop!🥷😼🦅
Steve Hou@stevehou

Chinese state media made an AI-generated cartoon about the US-Iran conflict. Extremely well done!

@pratyoushonta I have found this to be the case even with op-ed articles, which have far less rigorous standards than journal articles. Many don't like being edited. They write one draft and expect it to be published as is. When asked for edits, they disappear.

The point is not to name and shame. Perhaps it is much easier to dispense unsolicited advice here than write a 4000-6000 word commentary that would be subjected to critical peer review under a system managed by editors who have been doing that kind of work 20-30 years.
Pratyoush Onta@pratyoushonta

I don't know him personally. He is seen giving advice on many different subjects related to Nepal from abroad. So I asked him to write a commentary for the annual journal Samaj Adhyayan on the subject of his expertise. He agreed. Deadline passed. I sent reminder emails. No reply.

There was such a good article on why this portrait was made the way it looks now. Overly Masculine banako, when the first known portrait of PNS was a mithila painting with him holding a flower and book. And how this was made to make him look aggressive and like a "ruler"
DRD@Arsenal_Ktm

Someone should totally sell King Prithvi Narayan Shah's portrait on Amazon and Etsy. It's already super popular. I'm definitely keeping it in my office.

THREAD: 1.1. The World Bank just approved a $52 million loan for Nepal to clean up its air. The catch? Nepal has already collected over NPR 22 billion in pollution taxes since 2008. Why are we borrowing for a crisis we've already paid to solve? #Nepal #AirPollution @madhavjee
