The male Indian Peafowl is wearing the amazing outfit in the animal kingdom. The big fan behind the Peafowl is not actually his tail it is his upper tail covert feathers. Each one of these feathers has a eye" on the end that is called an ocellus. These ocellus are shiny. Come in colors like gold, emerald and sapphire. The Indian Peafowl can spread these feathers out to make a circle that is six feet across. He can also make them shake to create an interesting noise. The Indian Peafowl has a chest and neck that're a beautiful blue color. But this blue color is not made by a dye it is made by structures in the feathers that bend light. This is called coloration and it is like a magic trick that the Indian Peafowls feathers can do. The Indian Peafowl also has a crown of feathers on his head, which is called a crest. He wears this crest like a king would wear a crown. The Peafowls eyes are very sharp and he can see everything that is going on around him in the forest. The Indian Peafowl is doing all of this to impress the peacock, which is called a peahen. The eyes the Indian Peafowl has on his feathers the more attractive he is to the peahen. This is like a competition to see who is the most beautiful and the Indian Peafowl is definitely one of the favorites. The Indian Peafowl is a contender in this competition and he is clearly very good, at it.
