Update on my brother. It’s been a couple of days, so I thought I would update everybody on my brother and his condition. For those that were curious, he suffered what is known as a type B aortic dissection. This kind of dissection starts where the left subclavian artery branches from the aortic arch and can extend down. Luckily, his stopped dissecting above the branch point for the renal arteries. I am not a vascular surgeon, so I have to trust them in their course of treatment. Because there was no leakage, or tear that caused any leakage, such as when an aneurysm would rupture, they wanted to first bring his blood pressure down and stabilize him. His blood pressure was 225/120’s when he arrived at the tertiary care center, a repeat CT showed no progression of the dissection, so the surgeons opted to work on getting his blood pressure down before they did any surgery or other intervention. Repeat CT’s have shown no further dissection, without surgery. That shows me that your prayers helped. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. Now, he is being entered in a Duke university study (IMPROVE-AD if you’re interested) and will be randomized to either aggressive medical therapy, keeping his blood pressure and heart rate very low and being monitored closely with serial CT and MRI exams, or to the other group in the study where they receive an aortic stent and then follow up. Either way, he still is looking at another 10 days in the ICU. As a physician, I’ve only heard of limited cases where they did not bring the patient right into surgery, but I trust that the vascular surgeons in know exactly what they’re doing. Again, thank you for all of the prayers and good thoughts. I will keep people updated as things change.

Don't know what happened today or what I might have heard or seen, something is bringing back a bunch of memories that I wished I had forgotten. Been trying push the bad memories aside and remember the good ones instead. Just wish the good memories outweighed the bad ones.

My son used both in school. He was more of an audio learner, so we used audiobooks that had whisper sync so he could also read along. For a while, using both was more helpful for him than either one on its own. He's in college now and listens to audiobooks when he drives, but that's about it now.

I tire of this debate, but as a teacher: It matters for young people. They need to see the words, the construction of sentences. Most of my students who cannot spell tell me they always listen to audio if they "read" at all.
