In the 1940s, a group composed of ex-servicemen who fought for the British in WWII, notably in Burma ermeged. They were called 'Anake a 40'. The name translates to "The Young Men of 40," referring to the 1940 age set or "Riika ria 40".
They had millitary training and more importantly had seen the white man bleed and die in war. They also were not rewarded with land and money like their British counterparts
They eventually became the militant wing of the Kenya African Union (KAU) in 1946, where they organized urban defiance and organised resistance against colonial policies.
'Anake a 40' ended up training the next generation which formed the bulk of Mau Mau fighters. They also inspired the 1949 Women's Riots in Muranga, which I will talk about in my next post.
