For every Black woman who has ever wondered if she belongs in neurosurgery — this is what it looks like when you do. Dr. Odette Harris, MD, MPH, Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford School of Medicine and Director of the Stanford Brain Injury Program, is a global leader in traumatic brain injury care, research, and rehabilitation. With more than 25 years of distinguished service, her work continues to advance both the science of neurotrauma and the pursuit of health equity in neurosurgical care. Her impact is both clinical and cultural. As the Paralyzed Veterans of America Endowed Professor of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, she made history as the first African American woman in neurosurgery and the first woman at Stanford to receive this honor — a testament to her excellence, leadership, and enduring influence. Her extraordinary contributions have earned national recognition, including the establishment of the Odette Harris Lectureship by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons — an honor reserved for leaders whose work has transformed the field. Because when one Black woman rises in spaces like this, she doesn’t just take a seat at the table — she expands it. At the American Society of Black Neurosurgeons, we proudly celebrate trailblazers like Dr. Harris who embody our mission as The Home of Black Neurosurgical Excellence — advancing leadership, research, and equitable neurosurgical care worldwide. #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM #ASBNOrg #Neurosurgery #ASBNConnects #BlackWomenInMedicine #BlackExcellence

I have been at a loss for words. Sanjeet was not only a colleague & my main collaborator, but also one of my best friends. His enthusiasm to push the boundaries of science were unmatched. So little of our work would have been possible if it weren’t for his openness and bravery to do something new, but also his patience with us as we worked through MANY challenges! Sanjeet was a true advocate and pioneer for what we do in imaging, particularly our functional and 7T fields. He always sought even the tiniest advantage he could have to ensuring his patients have the best outcome. It is hard to express the impact his loss will have on his family, friends, colleagues, and medicine.

We grieve the untimely and heartbreaking loss of Dr. Sanjeet Grewal — a beloved husband, father, son, friend and an exceptionally gifted stereotactic and functional neurosurgeon. Read more: bit.ly/3ZrhQjJ

It’s never easy for a surgeon to step away from the operating room for four years to pursue a #PhD in pure research — but it was my dream to learn, discover, and contribute to high-impact science. I now look forward to returning to surgery and developing new ways to treat patients better, guided by what I’ve learned over the past four years (after, of course, two more short years of research in an amazing center 😄). And yes… we can officially say it — #PhDone 😄🎓✂️ Couldn’t have done it without my amazing wife Leyla ❤️ and a huge shoutout to my incredible PIs Dr. Andres Lozano and Dr. Robert Chen for their mentorship.
