Deepti Umashankar, a 1993-batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service from the Haryana cadre, currently serves as Secretary to the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She assumed this position on August 31, 2024, succeeding Rajesh Verma. In this role, she oversees administrative coordination and institutional functioning within the President’s Secretariat. 🏡 Born on August 1, 1970, Umashankar has an academic background in public administration and social sciences. She holds a master’s degree in Public Administration and an MPhil in Social Sciences, and is also a postgraduate in English literature from St. Stephen's College.📚 Over the course of her administrative career, she has held several key assignments in both the Government of Haryana and the Government of India. At the Centre, she served as Establishment Officer and Additional Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training, a role that involved overseeing senior-level appointments and personnel management across the Union government. In her home cadre of Haryana, Umashankar held multiple senior positions, including Principal Secretary in departments such as Women and Child Development and the Military and Paramilitary Welfare Department. She also served as Chairperson of the Haryana Staff Selection Commission and as Commissioner of the Ambala Division, handling administrative and governance responsibilities at the regional level. Her tenure in Haryana also included leadership roles in regulatory and environmental bodies, such as Chairperson of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board. During the 2016 Jat agitation, she was noted for continuing administrative coordination despite security challenges, an episode often cited in discussions of her field-level administrative experience. Empanelled for Secretary level posts in the Government of India in early 2024, Umashankar’s career trajectory reflects a progression through state administration, personnel management at the Centre, and finally to her current role within the President’s Secretariat. @IASassociation #BureaucratsMag
