In 2007, I was in Mombasa covering the elections.
At a polling station, a group of young men outside told me I could vote multiple times and add votes to their preferred candidate without interference.
To test the claim, I walked in and out of the station several times, and no one questioned me.
I didn’t cast multiple votes, but it was clear the system was wide open to abuse.
This wasn’t particularly shocking.
Fast forward to the vote counting at the tallying center—it was evident the process was largely ceremonial.
On the second or third day, as results trickled in,
I was standing next to the personal assistant of a senior politician.
The PA, who was a friend, received a call on his boss’s phone while the politician argued in a corner with election officials.
He excused himself and stepped aside to answer.
A few minutes later, the PA returned visibly shaken.
Despite his boss’s apparent lead in the results, he looked disturbed.
Leaning in, he whispered, “Mambo si mazuri.”
To cut a long story short, he told me as a friend to pack my bags and leave Mombasa immediately.
When I asked why, he explained that a high-ranking politician had called to question why Mombasa wasn’t up in flames like other parts of the country.
At the time, there were reports of unrest in several parts of the country.
Shortly after the message was relayed to his boss, violence broke out in parts of Mombasa that evening.
It was obvious there were people on standby and on speed dial.
What followed is now a painful history, no point in recounting.
The saying is true,
One tree can make a million matchsticks, but one matchstick can burn a million trees.
This is what I learnt in my journalism career;
To SOME politicians,
"We are just numbers"
"We are extensions of their play"
"We are tools for their ambitions"
"We are shadows in their spotlight"
Fellow Kenyans,
"Listen to what politicians are not saying in what they are saying."
We are flesh and blood and we will NOT be the fuel for their rise.

Prof Peter Wanyande: I didn’t hear CS Murkomen warn the abductors that the Ministry of Interior would act against them. Instead, he's cautioning youths about their social media outbursts. Leaders who don't provide satisfactory answers must resign #CitizenDayBreak @AyubAbdikadir
