Joe Pesci retired from acting in 1999. Over the next 20 years he made three movies. The two that mattered both happened because Robert De Niro picked up the phone. Everyone else mostly got a "no."
The "he retired for music" line gets repeated a lot, but it's pretty thin. Pesci put out one album in those 20 years. A jazz record in 2003, under the name Joe Doggs, with organist Joey DeFrancesco. That's it.
Mostly he played golf. He told New York magazine he hit the course every day to keep his sanity. His handicap is 15.9, not bad. Regular rounds with Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, and pro golfer John Daly.
The De Niro favor part is real. Good Shepherd was De Niro's baby. He directed it, he'd been trying to get it made for over a decade, and it turned out to be his second and last movie as a director. It's about the early days of the CIA. Pesci appears in exactly one scene, playing a mob boss named Joseph Palmi. The character's loosely based on Sam Giancana, the real Chicago mob boss the CIA recruited in 1960 to help assassinate Fidel Castro. In Pesci's scene, Matt Damon's CIA character is asking Palmi for exactly that kind of favor. What Palmi says back became the film's most famous moment. "We Italians, we got our families, and we got the church. The Irish, they have the homeland. Jews, their tradition. What about you people, Mr. Wilson?" Damon's reply: "The United States of America. The rest of you are just visiting."
That one favor set the pattern. When Martin Scorsese wanted Pesci for The Irishman in 2017, Pesci said no. Then he said no again. And again. Depending on who's counting, he turned it down between 40 and 50 times. De Niro kept calling him personally. Pesci finally caved, earned his third Oscar nomination, and put out his first new album in 16 years to go with the film.
Pesci and De Niro have made seven films together, going back to Raging Bull in 1980. That's over 40 years of friendship. Both of Pesci's post-retirement roles that actually mattered, Good Shepherd and The Irishman, happened because De Niro asked. Nobody else got him back.

Joe Pesci had retired from acting in 1999 to focus on music. He agreed to return for a single scene in The Good Shepherd (2006) only as a personal favor to his friend Robert De Niro, who directed the movie.

That chess scene in The Wire (2002–2008) where D’Angelo lays out the whole system, kings, queens, pawns, and Bodie still thinking he can move up… that moment quietly tells you exactly how it all ends.

what scene do you consider a masterpiece?

Mark Cuban sold Broadcast dot com to Yahoo for $5.7 billion in 1999.
He spotted the internet wealth transfer before most people had email. This time he quietly called the next one.
“33 million companies in this country. No AI budgets. No AI experts.”
Read that twice.
He’s not talking about startups. He’s talking about the dentist with three locations. The freight broker in Memphis. The family manufacturer running on spreadsheets from 2011.
They’ve heard of ChatGPT. That’s where it ends.
For twenty years, software worked like a landlord. One product, millions of tenants, everyone pays rent and nobody gets to move the walls.
AI flips the lease. The product can finally shape itself around the business instead of the other way around.
Which opens a door nobody is talking about.
Someone has to walk into these 33 million companies and do the work. Sit across from a 62-year-old owner, understand how his invoices move, hand him back a system that saves him 15 hours a week.
That person is not going to come from OpenAI.
Every smart 22-year-old right now is sprinting toward the same five labs. Cuban is pointing at the empty chairs in every other room.
Here’s the arbitrage: you don’t need to train a model. You need to know one industry cold and speak fluent AI.
The last time this setup existed was 1999. Every small business needed a website and almost nobody local knew how to build one. The operators who figured out dentists, restaurants, and contractors built agencies that printed money for a decade.
This time the ceiling is ten times higher.
33 million companies. A handful of people who can help them. The math does the rest.
Cuban saw the gap first. Whoever moves next owns the decade.

So after a record-setting first season in Dallas, George Pickens will not have long-term security with the Cowboys this season. This seems to be getting uglier than expected already.

🚨Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones: "We've made the decision that George Pickens will play under the franchise tag. There won't be any long-term negotiations."

@MarcoFoster_ @JamesCarville How many people in this country do you think know that Senators were never supposed to be elected, but appointed by state legislatures, but the 17th amendment just made them a more elite House of Representatives, nullifying the actual intention of the Senate?
