Here is my statement on the city's proposed newcomer reception centres. We will have many more conversations about this difficult matter. To quote a colleague: we need the courage that comes from a common purpose to do what’s right. seandevine.ca/councillor_dev…

The bigotry from some politicians dressed up as ‘a lack of services’ that has come with this is astonishingly parochial and these are the same people who routinely vote against more not for profit housing.

The sprung structure discussion is so incredibly disappointing. Nobody is happy to have to put this up. It is not a *choice*. People are coming here and community centres are currently overflowing as temporary shelters. The alternative is much worse - homelessness and huge costs.

Something that Tanya Talaga said a couple of weeks ago that hasn’t left me: when you think of Murray, think of the weight of hearing thousands of accounts of untold horror, and the toll it would take on your body. Think of taking that on. cbc.ca/news/politics/…

#ONpoli This sums up every Ford policy: Reporter: “A lot of Ontarians don’t have a car, so how would this (gas tax cut) help them?” Doug Ford: “Well, I totally disagree.”

$3.2 Billion is a lot of money and could be invested in making healthcare in #Ontario better. It could pay for 🧑‍⚕️36,000 nurses, 🥼17,000 doctors, or 🩺3,200 MRI Machines @fordnation would rather hand out a $200 bribe than find you a family doctor #onpoli

All of these outcomes are a result of people with decision making power being willing to imagine a different future & make their decisions to enable it.

Remember, Paris wasn’t “always this way.” It wasn’t even this way in late 2019 when I was last there. Just a few years ago, #Paris was choking in car traffic much more. This is new. This is leadership. Cities are a result of choices. HT @Khayat_Fouad

WATCH: Barcelona was never an obvious candidate to be a bike-friendly city. They knew traffic jams & air pollution couldn’t be solved just by managing cars & trucks. It took the pandemic for them to really transform things. ANY city could do the same now.

Buried at the very bottom of this story is data that there are only 10 international medical students in all of Canada What should have been the lede is that Ford used a 10 seat increase in medical students he could have created at any time to fan the anti-immigration mood

Here’s the truth. If a politician claimed loudly that cigarette smoking was actually good for you, he might be popular with smokers, but he would still be 100% wrong and irresponsible. That’s basically what Ford is doing. Calling something “common sense“ doesn’t make a lie the truth. Smart bike infrastructure mitigates traffic congestion. It allows more people to move in less space, with more choice, less public cost, fewer emissions, and less pollution. And it’s proven to provide an economic advantage for cities. It doesn’t cause congestion or make it worse. It keeps congestion from getting worse as we grow. That’s what all the evidence ACTUALLY shows. Designing car dependency makes traffic worse and more dangerous for everyone, including drivers. I actually suspect Ford knows all that. But he doesn’t care. He wants you angry just like his brother did, and distracted from the traffic congestion that his awful decisions around sprawl and car dependency have actually induced. I don’t know if it’s “common,” but it sure as hell is a fact.
