A lightbulb moment for me during Harry & Meghan’s visit to Australia was listening to Meghan speak about being bullied every day for 10 years and her stating that it will never stop because abusing her is a multi-billion dollar business. This literally brought tears to my eyes. And then it made me angry!😡 What this means is we too have to be clear that this abuse of Meghan will never stop, and we need to plan for the long haul. We can’t rely on traditional media to tell the truth. That’s on us now. So we have to become journalists, commentators and reporters ourselves because we’re the only people who will tell the truth. Meghan did not have to be perfect to deserve fairness. She did not have to be flawless to deserve dignity. She did not have to fit a nostalgic idea of royalty in order to be treated as fully human. What happened and continues to happen to Meghan is not simply criticism, it is the convergence of racism, misogyny, media opportunism, and institutional self-protection. It is important to say this plainly: racism does not only appear in crude slurs or explicitly segregationist rhetoric. It also operates through framing, emphasis, presumption, contrast, and disproportion. It is present when one woman is persistently cast as manipulative, threatening, vulgar, and ungrateful for doing things that others do with little outrage. It is present when normal human boundaries are recoded as aggression because they are asserted by someone racialized as “other.” It is present when a woman’s mere existence inside an old, overwhelmingly white institution is treated as a provocation.
