India is an amazing, pluralistic, democratic country with the world’s fastest growing economy. There is no defence for its continued Cold War era alliance with Russia, which is, to paraphrase the late John McCain, a failed gas station run by the mob, pretending to be a country. If India wants to be fully respected as a responsible democracy, it cannot continue to be the largest funder of Putin’s brutal war machine, both through black market oil purchases, and ongoing procurement of third rate Russian weapons systems. Speaking of which, today’s agreement has India buying Russian S-400 air defence systems. The same system that failed catastrophically for both Venezuela and Iran against recent attacks. The police have now arrested five individuals in connection with the crime, including Deepti's younger sister, Chandana, and her lover, Umar Sheikh Sultan. Jagtial Superintendent of Police (SP) A. Bhaskar stated that Chandana, too, held a B. Tech degree from a private college in Hyderabad. She had entered into a romantic relationship with Umar Sheikh Sultan—a resident of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh—who was her classmate at the same institution.
