Rain and thunderstorms are expected to impact New York City on Monday as a strong cold front moves through the region.
Rain may begin as early as Sunday evening around 7 PM and continue overnight into early Monday morning. Periods of moderate rain are likely through the morning commute.
Conditions become more active Monday afternoon as the front approaches. Scattered thunderstorms are possible during the day, with the greatest chance for stronger storms Monday evening.
The highest risk period appears to be between about 5 PM and 10 PM Monday. During this time, heavier downpours, gusty winds, and thunderstorms are possible as the cold front moves through the area.
Rainfall totals are expected to average around 1 to 1.2 inches across the city, with locally higher totals up to around 1.5 inches where thunderstorms develop. Most rainfall rates will stay under a quarter inch per hour, but heavier showers could briefly produce rates close to 1 inch per hour.
Localized flooding is possible, especially in low lying areas, underpasses, and locations with poor drainage. Ponding on roadways may develop during heavier downpours.
South to southeast winds will increase during the day Monday and may gust up to around 50 mph during the evening as the front passes.
Monday temperatures will reach the low 60s before cooler air moves in behind the front late Monday night. Rain and storms gradually taper overnight Monday into early Tuesday morning.

New Yorkers should allow extra travel time during periods of heavy rain, especially during the Monday evening commute. Avoid driving through flooded streets. Even shallow water can stall vehicles. Secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture or trash bins before winds increase. If thunder is heard, move indoors and stay away from open areas. Clear debris from nearby storm drains if it is safe to do so to help reduce street flooding. Stay informed by checking the forecast and signing up for emergency alerts: nyc.gov/notifynyc

The NYC Dept. of Health @nycHealthy has identified the first case of mpox clade I in New York City. The case is travel related and there is no known local transmission at this time.
Mpox spreads through close or intimate contact. People who may benefit from vaccination include people who have sex with men and identify as male, trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, or gender non conforming; people planning to travel to countries where clade I mpox is spreading and who anticipate sex with a new partner while traveling, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity; and anyone who considers themselves at risk through sex or other intimate contact now or in the future.
Health officials encourage people who may be at risk to get the two dose JYNNEOS vaccine, which lowers the chance of infection and can reduce symptoms if someone becomes sick. If you believe you were recently exposed to mpox, vaccination within 14 days may help prevent illness.

Southeast Türkiye: The Travel Advisory for Southeast Türkiye has been raised to Level 4 - Do Not Travel. The Travel Advisory for Türkiye remains at Level 2 - Exercise Increased Caution.
There were no changes to the advisory level or risk indicators for Türkiye. However, the area of increased risk in Southeast Türkiye was updated in the Travel Advisory to reflect changes to U.S. mission operations.
There is no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens for President Trump, Secretary of State Rubio, and the entire Department of State. On March 9, 2026, the Department of State ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and U.S. government employee family members to leave Consulate General Adana out of an abundance of caution.
