Son of caregiver held in ICE detention over unfounded PLO allegations dies; father barred from funeral —— Wael Tarabishi, a 30 year old US citizen with severe Pompe disease, died on 23 January in a Texas intensive care unit after his father and full time caregiver, Maher Tarabishi, was detained by US immigration authorities. Maher, a Jordanian national, was arrested on 28 October 2025 during a routine check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Dallas and held more than 200 miles away. Relatives said Wael, who had undergone 36 surgeries and was confined to bed, suffered a rapid health decline without his father’s daily care. He was hospitalized with sepsis and pneumonia and spent days in intensive care calling for his father, including during a month long ICU stay, before his death. Family members said officers ignored Maher’s long standing legal permission to remain in the US as his son’s caregiver and detained him despite explanations at the scene. ICE later alleged that Maher was a criminal and a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which has not been designated a terrorist group since 1987, a claim relatives described as unfounded. ICE did not allow him to attend his son's funeral.

Another way of thinking about this: If you're in Minneapolis right now, you're more likely to be killed by an ICE agent than by an undocumented foreigner.

Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.”

This is Alex Pretti, a VA ICU nurse, honoring a veteran he cared for at a VA hospital. The son of the deceased veteran just posted this video on Facebook with the following message: “RIP Alex Pretti, he was my Dads ICU nurse, he read my dad’s final salute at the VA after he passed away. Never wanted to share this video but his speech is very on point. Also my Fathers final words to me was continue to fight the good fight. He would be honored in Alex’ sacrifice, and ashamed of this current administration. In my Dads words I encourage you all to continue to ‘fight the good fight’”

An ICE agent in Minnesota to a woman recording him: “Have you all not learned from the past couple of days?” He then knocked her phone out of her hand. What has America become?

The 4th Amendment prohibits the government from going door to door searching for crimes to enforce. @VP's statement here should concern us all. Whether ICE agents looking for immigrants, ATF agents looking for guns, or IRS agents looking for documents, this is out of bounds.
