After deep reflection, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament. No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances. This is a painful but necessary decision, and I stand by it.

IM Sara Khadem turns 29 today. Originally from Iran, she broke with her federation in 2022 when she decided not to wear a headscarf during the World Rapid and Blitz in Almaty. That rebellious gesture meant she could not return to her country. Right after the event, she flew to Spain with her husband and baby, where she now lives. In July 2023, she was granted Spanish citizenship, and shortly afterward she won her first national title in her country of adoption. 🇪🇸 Sara enjoyed several sports growing up, such as tennis and basketball. But after being introduced to chess by one of her classmates at the age of eight, she asked her parents to enroll her in chess classes and progressed very quickly. She won the World Under-12 Girls Championship in 2009, the World U16 Girls Blitz Championship in 2013, and finished runner-up in the World Junior Girls Championship in 2014.
