obviously a cappella songs exist, but that’s not what we’re talking about? If you don’t want to give producers their splits then just make a cappella songs — the responsibility falls on you because to be a successful artist it requires you to create songs and then promote and market those songs, plain and simple. If you don’t want to do it then hire someone but it’s not on the producers.

this argument kills me every time because people don’t even know which 50% they’re talking about AND the ultimate irony is most independent artists are only collecting via their distributor (distrokid, tunecore, etc) which is only paying out on the master, they’re not properly registering or collecting from the other orgs (PROs, MLC, SoundExchange) and definitely not doing the work to exploit the IP on both sides through licensing opportunities, just collecting fractions of a penny and screaming at their contributors that they don’t deserve back end 😭🫠

I think you’re confused on how it all actually works: A song is technically 2 separate products, you have the composition (publishing) which is a standard 50/50 between writer and producer, — a producer is ALWAYS entitled to their 50% because they did HALF the work on the composition (melody + lyrics), this is the part you’re saying “cancels out” then there’s the master, which typically offers 3-5 points (%) to producers when artists are signed and reflective of the 80 (label) / 20 (artist) split, HOWEVER, if you’re independent and retaining 100% of the master, the producer definitely deserves more than 3-5%, especially if you’ve only paid a nominal fee (i.e. $2-500) or were given the beat on consignment, they’re still deserving of a piece of that pie. You chose to be the artist, they chose to be the producer, you can’t promo a song that doesn’t have a beat so they’ve already contributed to the release without needing to pay for promo, marketing, etc. Does it need to be a 50/50 split on the master? No, but that’s all up to negotiation. At BARE minimum, the producer always gets 50% pub and should get a fair split of the master decided by the context of the artists status as independent or major.

@jessydavid016 It’s not rocket science: if the producer wants 50% of the profits, they have to put in 50% of the efforts too. If they made the beat and the artist wrote and sang, those two cancel each other out. Now everyone needs to pitch in on publicity, marketing strategy and funds, etc

Chicago showed a lot of love. What a beautiful city. I truly enjoyed exploring parts of the city and being able to connect with people there.

Adding to this list, the new Ben Reilly album is fantastic. He takes the listener on a hero’s journey, encouraging reflection and making it easy for you to find similarities in your own journey. The superhero narrative ties everything together perfectly, down to the Stan Lee homage of the narrator.
I became a fan of Ben through his high energy tracks and seeing him perform live, but the deeply personal tracks on the latter half of the album are what really makes this project a standout. It takes a lot of versatility to be just as effective at making slaps as it is the reflective tracks. Ben has crazy flows that he utilizes like a tool belt, bringing out the right cadences depending on the vibe & pocket.
Lastly, the production on this album is some of the best of the year. The more melodic songs will cause you to get lost in the groovy instrumentals but the samples on the more heavy tracks touched my soul and made me feel every word that much harder.
Highly recommend a listen.
