14th December 2017 is a cherished date for the Irish Deaf community because this is the day Irish Sign Language (ISL) became a recognised language. In 2024 the NCSE introduced two new roles into the organisation. Irish Sign Language Specialist Classroom Supports (ISL SCS) and ISL Advisors. We ask the NCSE to support this day by asking colleagues to learn a few words of ISL, or maybe even the alphabet. Please show your solidarity by wearing blue on this day as blue is the international colour for Deafhood and the Irish Deaf Society. Look out for famous government buildings that will light up blue on this day in celebration. The Bill was brought forward by Senator Mark Daly and was officially signed into law by President Michael D Higgins on 24th December 2017 and was formally commenced in 2020. More than 5,000 deaf people use ISL daily along with approximately 40,000 hearing family members, friends, neighbours, and colleagues. View our ISL video: youtu.be/c7wyXRLe8Hg
