When Mark Twain visited the Land of Israel in 1867 under Ottoman rule, he did not describe some booming, densely populated Arab state that Jews later “colonized.” He described a neglected and desolate land. In The Innocents Abroad, Twain wrote about empty valleys, uncultivated fields, swamps, ruins, and long stretches of land with barely any people at all. He famously described parts of the land as “desolate” and “unpeopled.” That does not mean nobody lived there. Arabs, Jews, Christians, Druze, and others were living throughout the land. But Twain’s firsthand observations completely contradict the modern revisionist fantasy that the land was a thriving Palestinian national society before Zionism. Jerusalem itself had only around 15,000 people at the time, and Jews were already the largest demographic group in the city. Much of the land was poor, undeveloped, malaria-ridden, and economically stagnant after centuries of Ottoman neglect. The transformation came later. Jewish pioneers drained swamps, fought malaria and typhus, built farms, roads, universities, hospitals, ports, industries, and entire cities from the ground up, turning a neglected province into one of the most advanced and innovative countries in the world. People ignore Twain’s testimony because it destroys the simplistic colonial narrative they try to force onto Jewish history.

*Graham Platner opposes an assault weapons ban* Leftists: You see, he’s trying to win culturally conservative voters. He’s got to moderate to win *Josh Barro says Democrats must moderate to win* Leftists: this is liberal fascism
full slack@fullslack_

This is liberal fascism. Letting conservatives dominate the political landscape, rewarding them for it by uselessly courting conservative voters, & then putting on a big liberal smile & saying “vote harder next time”

lol not even a month ago, David Hogg said he would keep pushing Platner to support an assault weapons ban and criticized Janet Mills on her record on gun control. These guys really have zero principals and are just looking for a hero to worship.
David Hogg 🟧@davidhogg111

A few weeks ago, I sat down with @grahamformaine and we talked about guns. Graham supported Maine’s red flag law. Janet Mills opposed it, and vetoed a bill that would have banned bump stocks and similar rapid-fire devices. I, and other gun safety advocates, will keep pushing Graham on his assault weapons ban position, but it’s clear who has the weak record on gun safety here.

The Oslo Accords, which were signed in 1993 by Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat, are cited as a two-state solution — a framework for a Palestinian state alongside Israel. 6 months after sighing it, in an off-the-record speech in Johannesburg, Arafat himself called for “a jihad to liberate Jerusalem” and compared Oslo to a truce that Muhammad signed, only to break it two years later to conquer Mecca by force. iris.org.il/arafats-johann…

Let’s start with a basic question: what exactly is “Palestine”? What are its borders, broadly speaking? Can it exist alongside Israel, or only in place of it? Because historically, Palestinian answers to those questions have implied genocide, not coexistence.

This guy has literally attacked anyone who diverged on a single lefty policy as a sellout but on what used to be his most important issue, he's now all open arms. Fine to be heterodox but then you're a hypocrite for haranguing moderates
Cameron Kasky@camkasky

As someone who has hid from a school shooter, I disagree with Platner on the issue of the AR-15. But I agree with Platner on healthcare, stopping genocide, trans rights, breaking up the oligarchy, and stopping Republicans, so I can see past the gun control debate quite easily.

Nobody disputes that Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen is a skilled and seasoned prosecutor. So it shocked the local Jewish community — even in this era of appalling antizionist bigotry — when Santa Clara Superior Court Judge Kelley Paul effectively decided Thursday that Rosen’s Jewish identity precluded him from fairly prosecuting people who spray-painted “Death to Israel” on a university wall. Paul, shamefully, removed Rosen from the case. In doing so, she applied a racist double standard neither she nor any other judge in the United States would have dared apply to any minority group but the Jewish people. Haven’t posted on social in quite some time but can’t stay quiet in this time of loss. I’m struggling to tell all what Bobby Cox meant to me and so many others in Braves Country. He was the leader of men and a second father to so many Atlanta Braves thru the yrs. I’m so sad today, but as I sit here watching my two youngest boys play in their championship games on the day he passed, I can’t help but shout the same things he did from the corner of the dugout. ‘Come on kid, u got this!’ We are gonna miss him so much, but his legacy is forever cemented with the success of this franchise for the last 35+ yrs. He started it as GM, continued as manager, and passing the torch to others, the Atlanta Braves will continue to be force that Bobby Cox always wanted us to be. We love you Skipper. You were our rock. I love you more than words can express. My boys won both of their games…..Bobby had a hand, I have no doubt!

People like a good former antizionist story. “When you view Israel as a genocidal monolith, a bloodthirsty creation of Western interests, and not the formation of an indigenous people’s right to political protection, you cannot view Jewish history, lived experience, tradition, or statehood as natural or legitimate. If the origin story of Israel is thought of as manufactured, and thus arbitrary and exogenous, it’s hard to legitimize anything about it. You begin to “other” the very people these theories were meant to fight for.” Full piece here. open.substack.com/pub/kilejones/…

The #Braves are the oldest continuously operating sports franchise in North America, playing their first of 22,629 games, including postseason play, on April 22, 1876. Bobby Cox led the team as manager in nearly 18% of those games.
