David Raya outstanding. Two big saves, the first from a shot arriving at speed, the second from a header where his view was initially blocked. And one very important headed interception. Inevitable debate about whether Raya should have started in the cups. #SPOARS
@henrywinter Yes it’s a foul ..so again poor refereeing…typical English standards.
Leeds in control but a long way to go yet and West Ham will come at us now
West Ham disjointed, lax in possession, missing Summerville. Leeds deservedly lead. Should have had a pen, too. Kilman on Stach: late challenge, anywhere else on the field and that’s a foul. #WHULEE
@henrywinter ..not scoring the penalty really enforces what we currently believe to be the case..that’s he’s lost it completely as a top striker..I think he’s finished ..yet will go on to make a fortune in the Arab league or the MLS
Sad seeing Mo Salah’s decline and drift towards the exit. A great player in his prime, a joy to watch weaving through opposing defences and a magnificent role model. The one opponent he can’t beat is Father Time. Salah also playing in a Liverpool team bereft of belief. #MCILIV
"We have a chance to write more history for this club" 🏆
Leeds manager Daniel Farke insists he will name a strong lineup in their FA Cup quarter-final against West Ham ⚪️
Liftoff.

Artemis II will pave the way for future Moon landings, as well as the next giant leap — astronauts on Mars.
@henrywinter ..England has produced many great strikers over the decades and most England managers have enjoyed a richness of spoils to choose from.. with the game now full of foreign players and in particular foreign strikers it’s worrying we are not producing top class strikers
30 years ago, Terry Venables could leave out Ian Wright for Euro 96 because he had Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham, Les Ferdinand and Robbie Fowler at centre-forward. Elite options at No 9 now? Basically, Harry Kane.
Ollie Watkins, Dominic Solanke, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Danny Welbeck are below Kane’s level. Liam Delap needs to get the upward trajectory of his career back on track again. A “minor issue” benching/resting Kane will always be a major problem for England.
FA coaches at St George’s Park debate why there are so few 9s emerging. Focus on 10s and wide attackers in academies, more teams playing only one centre-forward in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 and cage styles leading to “ballers” not poachers are all reasons discussed.
Line-leading skills, back-to-goal expertise, finishing prowess need re-developing. Because Kane is 32 and succession planning is required. #ENG
@henrywinter ..we should not be in the least worried..England always stutter in these types of matches..we will be ready for the World Cup but Tuchel really needs to offload a few “very average at best” players..starting with O’Rielly..
@SkySportsPL ..it’s another rushed appointment..not the man for the job…he will struggle to get this team to play…it’s looking like a proper relegation battle ahead
@henrywinter ..maybe sold out..but always plenty of empty seats in the “red section” of Wembley 10mins before half time and another 10/15 mins after the second half starts!!
England v Japan, second game of the "Send-off Series" at Wembley, is sold out. Some players are out. Fans are all in. Game a mix of the familiar and the fringe. Jordan Pickford's 82nd cap takes him into the top 20 of England's all-time appearance-makers.
Pickford goes past Rio Ferdinand and alongside Raheem Sterling as joint 19th. Pickford so important, probably not fully appreciated, but definitely one of Tuchel's untouchables. (Dean Henderson and James Trafford good 2 and 3, though Trafford needs to address his lack of many club minutes over the summer).
Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi surely return in central defence, flanked by Tino Livramento on the right and Nico O'Reilly on the left. (Lewis Hall deserves some more minutes from the bench to show what he can do at left-back).
In central midfield, James Garner did well on his debut against Uruguay and is surely worth another look. Elliot Anderson first choice now so worth assessing Garner with him in absence of Declan Rice, who has returned to Arsenal. Garner offers plenty in and out of possession, also versatile, can cover at right-back, too. (Kobbie Mainoo will also be pushing for involvement).
Upfront of the likely 4-2-3-1, absentees on the right surely leads to a start for Jarrod Bowen. Morgan Rogers at 10 (and Jude Bellingham coming on) and Anthony Gordon left. Harry Kane returns up top looking for his 79th goal in his 113rd appearance.
Ahead of Kane are Steven Gerrard (114), David Beckham (115), Wayne Rooney (120) and Peter Shilton (125). 16: max numbers of games England could play this year after Japan, inc run to final (*) and 6x Nations League games. Kane could match or pass Shilton this year. Remarkable player. #ENG *ambitious.
Premier League fans deliver damning verdict on VAR. 75% of 7,946 fans polled by the Football Supporters’ Association “didn’t support the use of VAR”. Too long, too forensic, too much of a joy killer, fans say. Findings shared with Premier League and PGMO.
92% of fans surveyed “agreed” that “VAR has removed the spontaneous joy of goal celebrations” (82% of them “strongly agreed”).
85% of match-going fans “strongly disagreed” with the notion that “VAR makes watching football more enjoyable”. And 83% of those watching on TV.
85% of match-going fans “strongly disagreed” that “VAR decisions are generally resolved in a reasonable amount of time”. Echoed by 83% of those watching on TV.
Only 18% agreed that “VAR has improved the overall accuracy of refereeing decisions”.
72% are “concerned about the expansion of VAR beyond its current remit”.
79% “strongly disagreed” with the suggestion “that the match-going experience is better with VAR”.
67% “strongly agreed” that they preferred “watching games that are played without VAR to games with VAR”.
84% “strongly support” goal-line technology.
34% “strongly opposed” to the idea of a challenge system (two per game per team).
“These findings back up the FSA's previous survey in 2021, where fans expressed misgivings about the introduction of VAR,” says Thomas Concannon, @WeAreTheFSAPremier League network manager.
“The vast majority are reporting the same concerns five years on - the loss of spontaneity when celebrating goals, and an overall worsening of the match-going experience. We have shared the survey results with the Premier League and PGMO, and look forward to discussing its findings with them.” Fans surveyed of all PL clubs and all ages (Under-18 to 65+).
@henrywinter …always the same concerns and speculation before a WC..once England arrive in town they plan well and will be looking forward to getting stuck in as always..Tuchel is no mug and with his German Engineering we will do well..the lions are fearless
England are not in the class of France, Argentina or Spain. But they do have some exceptional talent. Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are world class. So is John Stones - at his best. Trent Alexander-Arnold is world class - in possession. Declan Rice is having the season of his life. There are more reasons to be positive going into this tournament than negative. But England have to be bold and play to their strengths.
Imagine if England were bold and, if all fit, went into the World Cup…
Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Stones, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.
Stones would have some covering to do of Alexander-Arnold when he raced upfield. Bellingham gets heavily scrutinised but he’s a big-game player, a winner and used to pressure at Real Madrid. He has to start. England also have an exceptional head coach in Thomas Tuchel who can make the right changes at the right time. England have a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of the World Cup and then anything’s possible. But only if they are bold. Not gung-ho. But bold. Risk/reward. #ENG
