The Indian Residential School system is not distant, far off history. The last school closed only in 1996. Let that sink in. 1996! For context, Friends was still on the air when Canada's Indian Residential School system was still running.

I intentionally put “Kid From Surrey” in all my bios as what I think is a radical act of reclamation. There is so much stigma around being from Surrey/being a young kid from Surrey and it’s absolutely unfair.

There are thousands and thousands of kids in Surrey doing incredible things. We’re winning awards, scholarships, starting non-profits, playing high level sports, making real change etc. Talk about them more. Change the narrative.
