For context, this is often less than a chest CT scan and far below occupational limits (e.g., nuclear workers averaged ~5 rem/year). Lethal acute doses are in the hundreds of rads. These doses came from the belts plus cosmic rays beyond them, and they were not a health issue for the short-duration missions. In short, NASA solved the Van Allen belt challenge with physics and engineering basics: go fast, take the least-bad route, use the spacecraft's natural mass for shielding, and measure everything. James Van Allen himself noted that the belts were not a showstopper for quick transits. Later missions like the Van Allen Probes (2012) provided even more detailed data on the belts' variability, but the Apollo approach was already proven effective decades earlier.
