Just got the email that all charges to my open NSF award are paused. I imagine NIH is coming soon. What happens to students everywhere when we can’t pay their salaries, even if it’s only a few weeks of a gap (at best)?

I'm trying something new: A (possibly) daily blog about biology and engineering. I'd like to see whether I can emulate Derek Lowe for, say, one month. My first post is about bacteria that were engineered to act as microlenses, focusing beams of photons.

Researchers: is there a Sci-Fi / fantasy book or movie that directly motivated your interest in science? I always felt that I wanted the world of Star Trek and that science was the only legitimate route to magic. Star Trek and a great chemistry teacher in high school, that is.

Our preprint on engineered bacterial microlenses is out! We engineered bacteria to display sea sponge enzymes on their outer membranes. These bacteria can self-assemble a bioglass coating around themselves, and focus light into bright, photonic nanojets. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
