Dario is wrong. He knows absolutely nothing about the effects of technological revolutions on the labor market. Don't listen to him, Sam, Yoshua, Geoff, or me on this topic. Listen to economists who have spent their career studying this, like @Ph_Aghion , @erikbryn , @DAcemogluMIT , @amcafee , @davidautor

In liberal western democracies, overt censorship has given way to structural control. Power no longer silences dissent outright; it channels it into safe boundaries. The “licensed critic” an ostensibly independent voice whose critiques align with dominant institutions, exemplifies this. Permitted to speak only within frameworks that bolster systemic legitimacy, the licensed critic sustains the illusion of pluralism while enforcing conformity, as Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Herman (1988) outlined in Manufacturing Consent. Their propaganda model identifies five filters—ownership, advertising, sourcing, flak, and anti-communist (now “anti-terrorist” or “pro-market”) ideology—that subtly shape media in capitalist societies. These operate not through force but via economic incentives and routines, delimiting “thinkable thought.” Critical voices within these bounds are essential: they absorb public discontent without endangering power structures. Thus, the licensed critic enables managed dissent—a curated opposition that legitimizes the status quo. George Orwell’s World War II tenure at the BBC’s Eastern Service illustrates this. Hailed as a foe of totalitarianism, Orwell crafted anti-fascist broadcasts for Indian colonial audiences, promoting “freedom” while shoring up British imperialism. As Priya Gopal (2017) argues, his efforts contained dissent under anti-fascism’s banner, critiquing rivals but not empire itself. Sincere but nevertheless steered, Orwell embodied the licensed critic: authentic in intent, but directed away from foundational threats like colonial self-determination. Contemporary journalism reveals similar constraints. Chris Hedges, a Pulitzer-winning ex-New York Times correspondent, earned acclaim for Balkan and Middle East reporting. But linking U.S. policy to capitalism, militarism, and empire’s bipartisan upkeep proved too far. Reprimanded after opposing the 2003 Iraq War, he exited mainstream outlets, a casualty of Chomsky’s “systemic self-censorship,” where dissent is allowed only if it spares power’s core tenets: profit, hegemony, market sanctity. The licensed critic thus anchors hegemonic stability. Their prominence signals expressive freedom; their limits ensure it remains harmless. Slavoj Žižek (2008) notes how power “integrates critique into ideology,” turning opposition into spectacle. The outcome: a paradoxical democracy, alive with debate yet impervious to structural upheaval. This is no flaw but design. Licensed critics portray the system as adaptive and open, they confine critique to policy tweaks and outrage, barring assaults on capitalism, imperialism, or exploitation. Managed dissent is democratic media’s triumph, not failure. Embodying modern control’s elegance, licensed critics inherit Orwell’s paradox and validate Chomsky’s filters: rebellion commodified, dissent domesticated. The licensed critic thus embodies the sophistication of modern information control. Far from destabilizing power, they legitimate it by performing freedom. Genuine dissent, the kind that questions the foundations rather than the facade, begins only where the license ends.

@donaldgorbachev War is not just soldiers killing. It is voters electing, taxpayers funding, contractors building & news readers nodding along. Everyone in the chain chooses. Orwell’s quote lets civilians off the hook. That is wrong. Take responsibility. Own your part. Silence is also a decision

“MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+” The Canadian government just dropped this absolute monstrosity (and no, it isn’t satire).

There is only one question that matters to Israelis. Can we exist as a distinct people on our own territory? Everything else is downstream from that. Israel will get its allies where it can find them, even in strip mall churches. Strip mall Christians will support them for their own reasons which were written down three thousand years ago and confirmed by a Jew two thousand years ago.

Trump: US should always have the lowest interest rate in the world

That’s not the reading the kitchen offered. Christian Zionism predates 1948 by three centuries. It starts with English Puritans in the 1640s under Cromwell, who readmitted Jewish people to England in 1656 specifically because Puritan theology had developed the idea that the gathering of Jews back to a homeland was a precondition for the second coming. That’s 1656. Three hundred years before 1948. The framework was English Protestant political theology, built inside the English Civil War period, exported through American Puritan settlers to the colonies, transmitted through American evangelical denominations for two and a half centuries, and finally codified in the 1909 Scofield Reference Bible. By the time 1948 happened, the framework had been operating inside English-speaking Protestantism for three hundred years. 1948 didn’t create Christian Zionism. 1948 was the political event Christian Zionism had been waiting for since the 1640s. LBJ’s mother and aunt were not fake Christians or covert anything. They were ordinary American Christian women from a Texas family that had been part of the Disciples of Christ tradition for generations. The Disciples of Christ have a documented history of supporting the restoration of a Jewish homeland on theological grounds going back to the nineteenth century — not because they were secretly Jewish, because that was the theology of large parts of American Protestantism long before any of LBJ’s family was born. Lady Bird Johnson was not a Jewish convert to Christianity. She was an Episcopalian from Karnack, Texas, whose family had been Episcopalian and Methodist for generations. None of the people in this story were “fake Christians.” They were real Christians inside a tradition that had been pro-Israel for theological reasons since Cromwell. This is exactly the move the kitchen has been refusing to make. The Hoover piece described an architecture built by two American institutionalists — Hoover and Johnson — who recognized that the dispensationalist project was the rising coalition in American politics and aligned with it. The piece named the theology, the 1909 Scofield footnotes, the USS Liberty cover-up, the destroyed Hoover files, the 1945 USS Quincy meeting. That’s a structural reading of a political-theological alignment. It is not a story about secret Jews infiltrating Protestant denominations. The “secret Jew converts” framing collapses three hundred years of documented Protestant theology into an ethnic conspiracy that the kitchen has explicitly refused to entertain because the ethnic conspiracy is what the door-to-door salesmen sell and the door-to-door salesmen have been showing up in the kitchen’s mentions all morning. Read the Hoover piece again. The conspiracy the kitchen entertained was that two American institutionalists — both ethnically Anglo-Protestant, both raised inside the existing Christian Zionist current that was already three centuries old — recognized which way the architecture was moving and built the American operational machinery to support it. Hoover did this by burning his files. Johnson did this by covering the USS Liberty. Neither of them needed to be secretly anything. The Christian Zionist theology had been waiting for them to inherit it. They inherited it. They built the machine. The machine is the architecture. The architecture is operating publicly. None of it requires hidden ethnic identities.

This is a good move—it buys us time. It’s essential that we use it wisely. Acknowledge that under current conditions, there are no military solutions and a true settlement is unlikely. Follow the Reagan-in-’84 model: pull our forces out of the region, let our Gulf allies negotiate to reopen the SOH, and refocus on the issues at home and winning the next election, like Reagan did. This is the opposite of what Israel wants us to do. To prevent Israel from pulling us deeper into this war, we must impose real restraint by limiting military aid to Israel. The escalation game is a losing hand. Dump it and walk away.

How was Iran able to repair *six* bombed railway bridges in just 72 hours? The method was actually developed long ago and is called the Bridge Rapid Replacement System. The secret is this: prefabricated structures - concrete and metal spare parts of bridges, exactly like the original - were stored next to the bridges. According to railway managers, repair teams only had to cut out the destroyed span and install the replacement part in its place with heavy cranes. Prefabricated structure technology is no longer a temporary solution; it has become a strategic model in Iranian defense engineering. Pre-crisis spare parts manufacturing, strategic stockpiling, and rapid replacement instead of time-consuming repairs have changed the equation of post-war reconstruction forever. The experience of the Ramadan War demonstrated Iran's capacity for anticipation and preparation before a crisis, not simply in reaction afterwards.
