Many years ago John gave me my first paying job in archives, cleaning Boston City Council dockets that were covered in coal soot, which was more fun than it sounds. Congrats on your retirement, John!

Some people are concerned about their legacies. I sleep peacefully knowing mine is secure.

@mike_rush hahaha. in this house we give feedback directly (he is currently giving feedback that he thinks swaddles are stupid; I remind him that his wacky t-rex arms stop him from sleeping)

I do a lot of collaborative writing, and one thing I suggest to help improve collegiality at the very beginning is that if you're the kind of guy who likes to leave a comment about an idea or a change, go ahead and suggest alternative language or another idea.

I think that sometimes the model that people have for engaging with one another's writing imagines themselves as the professor and the original writer as a student. Naw, man, you're just as responsible for improving this draft. Get at it.

Rarely post, but am moved to share my love for the J Mascis project Heavy Blanket. Heavy stoner rock grooves with J absolutely shredding the bejeezus all over it. No lyrics, just unrelenting forward motion. Absolutely perfect work music for me.

I have a new baby and he is perfect!!! I spent a lot of last night thanking God for medicine —and medical professionals — who were able to find a safe way to bring him into the world. He wasn’t going to come on his own at 41 weeks but he’s here now and I’m over the moon in love.

When I was at my last job, I helped manage a software development process that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars so that data that had previously been a customization could now be in alignment with what everyone else was doing -- and so there would be a place for that data.

I don't spend much time there anymore, but something I've noticed about the ASpace user list is that there's recently more "can I make the application do x" and "yes here's how" without talking about the idea that software should follow standards.

Baby's due date is today and it doesn't seem like he's going anywhere but he does occasionally do something that feels distinctly like knocking three times right above my navel.
