Mieszko’s victory at the Battle of Cedynia (972) is considered the symbolic “birth certificate” of Polish military tradition. It affirmed the independence and viability of the Piast state, secured key western territories, and marked the rise of medieval Poland as a future nation. 👇 youtube.com/watch?v=akq5GM…

I will gladly try to explain. Three of the shared pictures show a so-called dangae-dō (段替胴, literally “step-changing cuirass”). This is a unique style of Japanese cuirass in which the upper torso is made of ita-mono (solid metal plates/stripes) arranged in 5–7 rows and "laced sparse" (sugake odoshige). The lower portion transitions to traditional sane (scales) arranged in horizontal bands (usually 2–3 rows, plus the kusazuri), which are "tightly laced" (kebiki odoshige). (It is to be noted that often the lower are also mate from a single plate - ita-mono, and only look like traditional sane) There are various theories on the origins of this dō. Please let me know if this was helpful. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer.

That was an interesting read. Especially the "smooth" transition of the daimyō to a "simple person living an everyday life" seems so different then other stories "of death and dishonor" from Japan. Thank you for sharing the link to the pictures also. 👍

Hayashi Tadataka is often remembered as the last samurai. He was a young daimyō of the Jōzai Domain under Japan’s final shogun and fought during the Boshin War of 1868. The only known photograph of him was taken that year, when he fully expected to die and sat for what he believed would be his final image. Instead of choosing a dramatic end, Tadataka surrendered to imperial forces. At just 20 years old, he decided that life mattered more than a heroic death. He gave up his sword, dressed as a civilian, and found work as a simple store clerk. In ordinary clothes, he became indistinguishable from everyone else and quietly disappeared into everyday life. Hayashi Tadataka lived until 1941, spending his later years with his daughter and grandchildren. On the day he died, his daughter asked him for a traditional death poem. Calm and clear-minded, he replied, “I wrote one in 1868. Not now,” and then passed away. The most haunting photos ever taken: bit.ly/46yA996

@xNhLqbkEnk3ppYa This is a beautiful photograph. I believe this may be Komako Hara (1910-1968). However, I am not sure. Did the movie from the frame survive? What was the title of it?

Our Hurricane G-HURI inside the @RAFBBMF Hangar last September ahead of the Members Day. Sadly the strong winds grounded some of the flying activity that day and we were unable to fly with the BBMF - In particular their Hurricane LF363 🇬🇧🇵🇱 We think it would be the First time both Polish Battle of Britain Fighter Squadrons would have been seen in the air together. Who knows for 2026?

That depends on the type of armor. In this case the dō (cuirass) is an go-mai dō ("five plate cuirass" closed on the right side) which is (also) hold together by hinges. Each plate is made of metal stripes (ita) which traditionally were bound together by leather strips (additional to the lacing - odoshige) or a singel piece of material (on the inside). This means that, with regard to this particular type of dō, even if an entire row of odoshige is cut, it would not affect the effectiveness of the armor. It may be different for the kasazuri (the skirt attached to the dō (cuirass)), as the (inner) bindings may differ. However, this may be deliberate and also depends on the type of kanzuri. The below post from @kadoya_kouji is showcasing an earlier stage (I believe) of making this beautiful dō, which for sure will help understanding the construction details described. x.com/kadoya_kouji/s…

@kadoya_kouji I admit I don't know Japanese armour nearly as well as I do European, so this is as genuine and honest question: how vulnerable are those laces to being damaged or cut, and how would that affect the effectiveness of the armour?

Even before the Meiji era Japan's literacy rate was remarkably high. Overall population literacy is estimated at ~30–47% by the late Tokugawa period with higher figures in cities like Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka (male 60%+ and female ~40%) Thank you for sharing the beautiful woodcuts. 👍 I especially admire the one from Yōshū Chikanobu showcasing the clash between Kato Kiyomasa and Honda Tadakatsu in the battle of Komaki (1584). It shows remarkable attention to details of the armor of both samurai. Here is a woodcut by the mentioned artist depicting the same campaign. "Sakakibara Yasumasa Pursues Hideyoshi at Komaki-yama."

燃えたいゴミ!!
Japan established compulsory education in 1872 and had maintained a high literacy rate since the Meiji era. For Japanese children before the war, the figures they read about, listened to, and admired were brave samurai and soldiers. For them, the way these heroes lived and died served as their role models. The high discipline of the Japanese military was praised even by other countries. However, postwar education thoroughly suppressed and erased these aspects... This is based on my personal experience.....😑

The staff members who created the hero stories that captivated my generation were, for the most part, people who had experienced war firsthand. Of course, many of them had also served in the military. In an era when expressions of “Japanese-ness” were censored and the Japanese military’s perspective was suppressed, what exactly did they want to convey to children through entertainment…? “大和魂 (the Japanese spirit)” and “武士道 (the way of the warrior)” were certainly passed down through these forms of entertainment.

I like this idea 👍 I view the nanban-dō / nanban-kabuto as unique works of Japanese craftsmanship and art that not only provided protection but also highlighted the high status of the warrior. In regards to the protection against musket fire I came across tameshi-dō of various kind showing projectile dents. Below is an example of a nanban-dō attributed to Tokugawa Ieyasu and donated to Kishu Toshogu Shrine (紀州東照宮) in Wakayama. Thank you again for you response and the shared pictures. This is an great opportunity for me to learn something new. 👍

It is amazing for me to see, that there is a distinction of "fish tail kinds" used in the forms of kabuto: Masu-o - Trout-tail shape Namazu-o - Catfish-tail shape Same-o - Shark-tail shape I'm more familiar with a general kawari-kabuto shape, called simply gyotō - fish:

@msfugier 謙信は自分の鉄砲隊に、こういう「鯰尾」の兜を使わせていた形跡があります。弾丸を逸らすデザインです。謙信はヨーロッパの甲冑を見たことなどないでしょうが、合理性的観点で模索した結果、形が似ていったように思えます。
