It is profoundly heartbreaking to witness another surge of xenophobic violence in #SouthAfrica this week. Hundreds have marched on Parliament, thousands of families have been displaced, and lives have been tragically cut short. These include at least five Ethiopians killed earlier in the attacks, and five Mozambicans who died in Mossel Bay. Thousands more are now fleeing for their lives. To see South Africa turn to xenophobia is a tragic betrayal of the country's struggle for independence and freedom. African nations stood united to dismantle apartheid. Ethiopia proudly supported "Madiba," Nelson Mandela, in 1962 and issued him a passport so he could travel the continent. Other countries helped in many ways, including with political and financial support. Disagreements and grievances must be addressed by the justice system and the rule of law, never through vigilante violence and collective punishment. South Africa deserves better. Africa deserves better. Stop the hate. Protect the vulnerable. Uphold our shared humanity.

This operation was carried out by the Garda National Immigration Bureau. 10 (~16%) of the deportees were convicted of offences in Ireland. This is how civilised countries handle illegal immigration. Zimbabwean man loses High Court bid to overturn Home Affairs ban after court confirms permanent residence permit obtained for R12 000 was fraudulent and invalid The Western Cape High Court has dismissed a Zimbabwean man’s application for an extension of the 180-day period to review Home Affairs’ decision declaring him a prohibited person over a fraudulent permanent residence permit. The case involved 40-year-old Fidel Isheanesu Mugunzva, who challenged the department’s findings and restrictions placed on him. According to court records, Mugunzva first entered South Africa in 2011 on a visitor’s visa that expired in October and later November that year. In 2012 he obtained a permanent residence permit through an immigration agent named Wendy after paying R12 000, later using it for travel, employment, and banking. In 2020 the Department of Home Affairs informed him that the permit did not exist and was fraudulent, declaring him a prohibited person. Mugunzva returned to Zimbabwe in 2022 and told the court he was too poor to pursue legal review, although judges questioned his financial claims and supporting documents. Despite finding that Mugunzva may have had reasonable prospects of success and that Home Affairs did not properly allow representations or fully investigate whether he was a victim of fraud, the court ruled that his excessive delay in launching the review application outweighed those factors and dismissed the case accordingly.
