The non-English tax is real. Sutton's Bitter Lesson, translated across languages and normalized to OpenAI English token count: Hindi: OpenAI 1.37×, Anthropic 3.24× Arabic: OpenAI 1.31×, Anthropic 2.86× Chinese: OpenAI 1.15×, Anthropic 1.71× Claude’s tokenizer charges a much higher linguistic tax.

What do the smartest kids in the world do when they grow up?
I did the largest study of ~18,000 International Olympiad medalists (IMO, IOI and IPhO) over the last 25yrs, arguably the sharpest analytical minds of the world in high school, to see where they ended up and traced ~50% of them.
Founders of ~20 unicorns and ~7 decacorns and ~10 billionaires: OpenAI, Cursor, Stripe, Databricks, Perplexity, Ethereum, Cognition, Hyperliquid, Fireworks, Modal, Quora, Parallel, Cartesia, Wispr
Most kids went to MIT, a whopping 12% of them, followed by Cambridge (7%) and Sharif (3%)!
The career paths they chose (of those who graduated) were:
— 36% Academia (professors)
— 26% Other
— 22% in Software / Tech
— 12% in Quant / Finance
— 5% Founders!
The biggest employer was Google, by far, at 6%.
Others interesting tidbits were:
— 47 of them work at Jane Street (#3)
— 38 at OpenAI (#5)
— 15 at Anthropic
— 8 at Cognition
— 6 at Isomorphic Labs
Olympiaders were 1500x more likely to be billionaires and 4000x more likely to be unicorn founders than the average person!

Jane Street made ~$40B in 2025 with 3,500 employees, a ~2x from the year before.
At ~65-70% profit margin, that's $8M profit / employee, the highest for a 1000+ ppl company. High-frequency trading continues to be the most efficient money making engine.
I want to share an old story about my Jane Street interview in 2014. Jane Street was known for hiring a lot of math, physics and CS olympiad winners from top universities and putting them through many rounds - including, for trading roles, a gauntlet of mental math. It was my 6th interview and my final round and I recall being asked "What is the next day after today in DD/MM/YYYY where all the digits are unique?" They'd toy with you and say "You can use a pencil and paper, if you want" but you knew that was an instant no. Painstakingly and as quickly as I could, I came to an answer. "How confident are you that this is correct on a 0-1 probability scale?" the interviewer said. "0.95", I blurted out, not fully knowing how to answer that. "Are you sure?" After thinking harder for a few more seconds, I realized I could've flipped the digits around to get a closer date. I gave the interviewer my answer. It was correct. "0.95 huh?" he chuckled. That's when I knew I failed.

ここで一つ気になるのは、NECは自社AIブランド「cotomi」を持っているという点です。それでもAnthropicと組む選択をした。AIエンジンで世界と競うより、世界最高水準のAIを日本の企業・行政に「安全に届ける橋渡し役」に徹する方が勝算が高いと判断したのだと思います。

10年以上アメリカの大学でCS教えてる先生が、2024年だったかな？の春に学生に急激な変化が起きて、家でやってきてもらう課題はみんな満点に近いのに最終試験が前代未聞のひどさで、学生が１学期かけてほぼ何も学ばなかったことがわかったらしい。名門大学でこれ。授業も評価方法も全部変えたとか

The other 294 are fighting over 47 internships that require "3+ years production experience" Career services is telling them to "consider adjacent fields" while the department just took a $50M donation from a company that replaced 2,400 engineers with Claude One kid showed me his rejection tracker: 1,247 applications since September. 12 phone screens. Zero offers. His parents refinanced their house for his tuition The career fair had 8 companies and 300 desperate students in $180k of debt Meanwhile the CS department just announced they're expanding their PhD program because "industry demand for AI research has never been higher" The same week they sent acceptance letters to 89 new undergrads These kids thought they were learning to be engineers. Turns out they were training to be obsolete.

Peter Thiel just compressed forty years of American decline into one sentence.
