EU foreign ministers are planning to discuss the possibility of engaging in direct talks with Russia when they meet later this month - Kaja Kallas "Before we discuss with Russia, we should discuss amongst ourselves what we want to talk to them about, and that is why we have Gymnich meeting coming with the Foreign Ministers." Kallas stressed that the issue of European security is that Russia constantly attacks its neighbours and how we can prevent this. She also responded to Putin’s proposal to appoint former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a negotiator between Russia and the EU: "First, if we give the right to Russia to appoint negotiator on our behalf, that would not be very wise. And second, I think Gerhard Schröder has been high level lobbyist for Russian state-owned companies."

The government promised this would bring prosperity and lower prices. Instead, one of the first things that happened is that mandatory car insurance (called “Civil Liability” or “Гражданска отговорност”) has skyrocketed. In just one year (May 2025 – May 2026): • Normal car insurance rose by 15% on average — now around 360 leva (€184) per car. • Motorcycle insurance nearly doubled (+100%) — now 250 leva (€128). • Insurance for trucks, buses and heavy vehicles went up even more. These huge extra costs hit the transport industry hardest. Truckers and bus companies say they can’t absorb it, so they are passing the bill to everyone else — meaning higher prices for bread, milk, fuel and all basic goods in the shops. Today, angry drivers and transport workers are blocking the center of Sofia in protest. In parliament, a Bulgarian opposition MP gave a fiery speech accusing the government and previous pro-EU politicians of this disaster: • They rushed through new Insurance Code changes just to please Brussels and meet eurozone requirements. • The rules benefit big Western European insurance companies. • Bulgarian drivers, businesses and families are left paying the price. • He demands an immediate audit of the insurance market, a real bonus-malus system (discounts for safe drivers), a revision of the law to protect Bulgarians, and a complete stop to any new price hikes.
