It is October 7th, and the world should be mourning with us, the Jewish people. But many will not be. That is frustrating for us, but also understandable. We made sure to minimize sympathy in a few ways: 1) By constantly milking sympathy for October 7 as a way to cynically justify Israeli atrocities. 2) By denying and minimizing the horrors experienced by the Palestinians. 3) By exaggerating the atrocities with lies like babies in ovens and decapitated babies. 4) By acting as if the events of October 7th happened in a vacuum and did not occur in the context of years of occupation and war crimes against the Palestinians. 5) By using the horrors of October 7th to deny Palestinians self-determination. You cannot gain sympathy by cynically exploiting the suffering of the victims and using it to cause more misery. It is not fair to anyone, least of all the victims' families and the people of Gaza, and it just doesn't work. Maybe one day, we can all respect each other's trauma and move towards peace. Unfortunately, that day is not here yet.
