cosmic rays create xenon isotopes from decaying iodine isotopes I129 which is found in abundance in seawater so one can assume after the Martian ocean dried out and left behind the iodine in the soil the very thin atmosphere offered no protection from cosmic rays

there won't be a second date, but at least now she knows that the levels of xenon isotope in the Martian atmosphere are consistent with the aftermath of a nuclear bombardment
