On this day 106 years ago, young pilgrims line up for holy water at the Lady's Well in Mulhuddart (from Mullach Eadrad, mound of the milking). Many shrines like this were originally ancient Pagan religious sites that were Christianised. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Ladyswell was a popular pilgrimage spot since at least Norman times. King Henry VI (1421 -1471) established the Order of the Guild of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose job was to be custodians of Marian shrines, including the Lady’s Well. They would've built a small structure around it and planted a "sacred grove" of trees. After the king died, the guild disbanded, and the Augustinian nuns of Grace Dieu took over the Wells maintenance. Their convent was in Luttrellstown. The current structure was erected by nuns circa 1744. They also added the engraved capstone, which reads, ‘Holy Mary, Pray For Us’ and to the side, ‘O Blessed Mother and Ever-Virgin Glorious, Queen of the World, Make Intercession For us.’ The other side's letters are partially eroded, but you can make out ‘Vouchsafe that I May Praise Thee O Sacred Virgin Ob.." The well drew huge crowds annually on the 8th of September, the feast of the birth of the Virgin Mary (Lady's Day). Many pilgrims hoped the sacred water would cure rheumatism and similar conditions. But it wasn't only the pious or those in pain who came in their droves. Miniature tent cities would pop up to cater to the crowd. After opportunistic peddlers and locals began selling alcohol the annual festival earned a reputation for drunkenness and violence.
