This is such a tiny piece of limestone but still an absolute favourite - a wee Loxonema gastropod sat on top of a bryozoan that is lying on a crinoid ossicle, which is on top of a brachiopod fragment! Rocks are awesome. 330 million years old from Fife, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It’s awesome that something so delicate can last 310 million years and still look this beautiful 🌿 this is Neuropteris, an extinct seed fern from the Scottish Coal Measures of Fife 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Great field trip to Hopeman today, in collaboration with @scottishgeology and led by our very own Dave Longstaff. Superb examples of soft sediment deformation in Permian wind-blown sands.

#Stirling Castle sits on natural ramparts made of volcanic rocks. They pushed up through the softer Carboniferous sediments, which have since been eroded. 6,500 years ago sea levels were higher, and these were islands in a firth reaching far inland. 1/3 #scottishgeology

If you’re around Glasgow tomorrow & looking for something to do.. then you should head along to Fossil Grove in Victoria Park between 12-4 - you’ll get to see an awesome example of an in-situ Carboniferous forest! A true hidden gem with over 330 million years of history 🖤

In 1852 Fife had a ‘gold rush’! Gold was found in the Lomond Hills, inspiring thousands to flock there in search of fortune. Unfortunately, the gold turned out to be pyrite ‘fairy balls” 😅 it was named the 'fools’ gold rush' & it ended as quickly as it started! #mineralmonday

May 5, 1818, birthday of German philosopher Karl Marx. His thoughts on #economy & #society may well known, but Marx was actually also interested in #geology & copied some geological drawings, like of the basalt cliffs of Staffa, Scotland
