I take a different view on tanking. It’s the opposite of analytics. I blame magical thinking where an organization thinks it can draft its way out of trouble without thinking through obvious holes in culture, mediocre coaching, front offices managing up and or general incompetence, and ownership groups who found a new vanity project. Winning is a mindset. Once you get comfortable losing it is hard to course correct. My prediction is we will see most of the 10 tanking teams in the same spot 1 year from now.

Poor timing for Anthropic’s Claude ‘nerfing.’ I’m always looking to maximize quality/minimize cost so I do a lot of back and forth query with Claude itself to rewrite/improve my prompts. I find it almost impossible now to get good reconciliation between these 2 objectives. I am hitting limits much quicker if I prioritize quality and degradation in answer when I prioritize token usage. Anthropic through a series of successful product releases is getting a lot of free marketing. This is bringing a lot of AI-curious into the fold. Like all ‘hot’ products, if you frustrate customers in a relatively competitive market, you get switching especially for those that don’t know where the sweet spot is amongst the various LLMs. I get the preference for the enterprise customers but man you got Grok and others nibbling on Claude’s heels with the rank and file users. Not a good time for Anthropic to get comfortable with these trade offs that appear to be alienating many of its loyal users.

If the Knicks are going to give Celtics this many 2nd chance points they will lose. Celtics always bring a lot of energy effort.
