Overall, the paper aims to contribute to addressing the current research gap on the links between financialization and money laundering, especially in (semi-)peripheral contexts.

The paper finds that DF was key to enabling ML and IFFs from Russia and the post-Soviet space, albeit in different ways in each country. The research also points to the emergence of new risks concentrated mainly in the Fintech sector and amplified by the War in Ukraine.
