Fun fact: Some people in medieval France venerated a dog named Guinefort as a saint and martyr, and the Church had to suppress the practice. [Story below]
_____
According to the legend, in the 13th century, in France, a Knight left his infant son in the care of his dog Guinefort and went hunting. When he came home, he wasn't able to find his son, and then his dog came to him with bloody jaws.
He thought the dog killed his son, and with sudden anger, he slew the dog with his sword. After that, he saw his son crying in a room. Next to his son, there was a dead python injured by dog bites.
The Knight understood what he did. He dropped the body of the dog into a well, planted trees around it, and built a shrine there in memory of his dog Guinefort. Later, some medieval Catholics started to venerate the dog.
