In 2000 I started helping a local sheep farmer in the summers.
He told me a person could consistently make $60,000 a year profit on 1,000 ewes.
$60K could just as well been a million dollars to a 14 year old.
But, I never got to 1,000 head to test it.
Curious, I asked a sheep farmer friend of mine the current economics.
He recently sold lambs and sent me some numbers to plug into an enterprise budget.
Here's the summary
$83K profit to pay for his time.
--> Obviously a lot of variables for each operation, but the economics seem feasible.
In his situation, he has a small operating line, small equipment loan, and about $25K owed on the ewe flock.
He also had hired help of about $15K.
