I went to visit my sister, and her 7years old son insisted on coming with me. While I was still chatting with her, he had already packed his small bag and was quietly sitting in the parlour waiting. I asked my sister if he was okay because he looked too serious for a child who usually loved playing. Then she told me something that shook me, he came 27th out of 30 in his class. Honestly, I was shocked. But I told her, “Calm down. He will do better.” When we got to my house, he still wasn’t himself. No playing with other kids , no laughter, just silence. So I called him and asked, “What’s wrong?” He just looked at me for a long time… then said softly, “Aunty Gift… I failed.” That one sentence hit me hard. He said he was scared of going home, not because his dad would beat him, but because he might be disappointed in him. Then he started crying. And before I knew it, I was crying too. He looked up at me and asked, “Why are you crying?” I told him, “If you are sad, I am sad too.” He wiped his tears slowly. Then I told him something I hope he never forgets: “You are not a failure. You just need to play less, focus more, and you will get better.” He said okay , and started making positive affirmations about himself.. 😂 After that, I made food, and we came out of that mood. When his father called me, I explained everything, and my brother-in-law understood. And here’s what I learned that day: I know it’s not easy for a parent to see their child lagging behind academically, but children need grace, help them grow. Today, that same boy is doing much better. Small encouragement today can shape a child’s future mindset.
