@tasogarenoudewa Oh yeah Square unfortunately infamous for creating engines that become a development burden. Crazy to think they advertised Luminous ages ago and its first real showing was... Forspoken. In that sense good on Nomura for just switching to unreal for his games.

@peggedleg like as an example: they couldn't get crystal tools together in time despite pushing for it so hard so straight up the developers were working on the game (and XIII) with no engine for god knows how long, just creating assets. i really feel for the both of them

I don't think it could have ended up as anything else. Square was deathly afraid of their own audience, the Versus XIII crowd swears it would have been good under Nomura's direction but the fact it spent so long in development hell before Tabata took over says otherwise, etc.

@tasogarenoudewa that's fair. I personally don't have nearly as much faith on Nomura as a director as the versus crowd seems to have so don't think that would have solved the problems. He himself is one of the execs so much like with Yoshi-P during XVI can't say I think that's the problem.

@peggedleg ive watched some videos on how the development went and how the cards were stacked against them from the start and i think the real source of the problems was the execs. on top of them sending tabata out to die versus XIII was nomura's baby and at every turn they fucked him over

It was never going to measure up to expectations set almost a full decade earlier but over time learned to remember the good. Knocked characterization for the main cast out of the park, imo Fodina Caestino is simply brilliant as a dungeon. Enough for me atp.

Ultimately think Tabata was thrown under the bus. Made to dedicate precious development time, creativity, and effort catering to a public that didn't really know what they wanted. Mainline FF with Kickstarter-like polls on what extraneous shite they wanted was fated to underwhelm
