Today is March 18. #OTD in 1690 mathematician Christian Goldback was born. Best known for the Goldbach Conjecture, which states that every even natural number greater than 2 is the sum of two prime numbers (which he wrote in a letter to Euler). Remains unproven.

Today is March 5. #OTD in 1827 polymath Pierre-Simon Laplace passed away. His work has been instrumental in fields of physics, astronomy, mathematics, engineering, statistics, and philosophy. He summarized and extended work of his predecessors in his 5-volume Mécanique céleste.
